you can buy an off the shelf PC and do this pretty easily.

I have built HTPC, and bought off the shelf. i am currently using an HP HTPC. While there are advantages to building, namely its cheaper and the form factor helps, I don't see myself building another HTPC. Building a PC is time consuming, especially if you don't know what you are doing.

And I am not sure you need an HTPC. Why not get a roku, and then something like airfoil for PC to stream your google music and sirius XM to your reciever or airplay device?

c'mon stout i've built PCs too. you know damn good and well most of the work is getting *ALL* the right pieces the first time and understanding how to put things together. the actual build isn't time consuming if you have the experience level.

just like a plumber can repipe my sink in 10 minutes that i spent 2 days on..

It's pretty nice being able to use the computer from the couch on my tv but I agree that if you just want streaming from a box with hdmi cable you can get something cheap off the shelf. Our desktop (that is connected to our living room tv) is $300 gateway that dvrs from my network tv tuner card and serves up my media from plex. I can't play games on it but I don't have time for pc games and the ps3 is easier for the kids to use.

Also, with having the tv as the monitor and using bluetooth mouse and keyboard on the coffee table I'm able to teach all 3 of them how to do things at the same time.

its way more than an hour. Its a few days to even select the parts, or at least for me it is.

actually putting the pieces together will still take at least an hour, probably closer to 2-3. And then you still have to install OSes, configure your programs, etc.

if you unmarried, no kids, and no social life, no problem. But frick I am busy.

I also can't watch south park studios and whatever else requires flash for ie on Xbox.

Up to $800 is worth it for a single box that does everything thing I want.

Yep, works fine.

I'm way too cheap for that.

I do get to flex my tech muscles with company purchases. We currently have 5 machines we paid about $5500 a piece about 4 years ago. Only thing they really need now is upgraded gpus.

yeah, time is more valuable to me than cash. And I know this shite takes way longer than it should, especially if you don't regularly build PCs.

So I bought it, and bought top of the line.

In retrospect, I wish I had gone with a Roku and used my existing hardware, and just streamed. While I do a lot of stuff from my couch, most of it I could do on my tablet instead.

No offense but there is no such thing as "top of the line" for off the shelf desktops.

For $1800 I could build a PC that would make yours look like it had downs syndrome.

MY HTPC/Steam box cost about $1600 and I promise it has way better specs and hardware.

I am sure you could. I don't doubt that.

But I bought the most expensive option I could, and then upgraded a lot of components.

You literally could've built a rig and then flushed 500 bucks down the toilet and had the exact same outcome.

Unless you are on the Forbes 500, I highly doubt this.

You have time to post on a message board but not enough time to save money and build a PC. Sounds logical.
