Well after having my fitbit HR die after four months just while fishing and keeping dry I need to upgrade. I loved the fitbit but it can't even look at saltwater evidently. It appears that the Garmin is superior to Fitbit for swimming but can't make up my mind.

I am not tech savvy at all, so ease of use for both the watch and software would be nice. I am used to the fitbit software.

TIA!

TomTom is great for swimming. Counts laps/distance. They have one for about $100.

Does it track HR effectively while in the water?

Is money a concern? If not, the Garmin Fenix 3 is your best bet. It's the best fitness watch out and does swimming + every other sport known to man.

Thanks for the replies I will look at all mentioned. Was hoping to not spend $500 on a watch but if it works and won't die if it sees water it's likely worth it.

Well, it is expensive but I use my Garmin Fenix 3 every day. It hardly ever leaves my arm and I only need to charge it for about 30 minutes once every 1-2 weeks.
I use the heart rate strap with it everyday at the gym and have had it for over a year plus.

Swim with it, wear it in the shower, etc. It is expensive though and it is a larger watch.

I think salt water will be a concern no matter what. I have a sony smartwatch 3 (android) and it's water proof but they explicitly say not salt water, so it never sees my pool.

No matter how rugged, how water tight, how awesome they say it is, never trust a watch in water. They have an opening and that opening can be breached. A seal can fail, a watch can be ruined. Trust me on this. I know a little about watches.

That's up to you. I would wear a dive computer but that's just me. I choose to not get water anywhere close to my watches. Well as little as possible anyway

Thanks would be interested but doesn't look like it's built much for swimming and that is a feature that is important to me.

I had a Fitbit Charge, and the strap started peeling around the tracker. That's the one that they don't sell replacement bands for, and Fitbit sent me an Alta as a replacement. Neither do HR, but I didn't care about that. My wife and daughter both have a Garmin VivoFit. They're waterproof, and also have a replaceable battery. They've had them for about 5-6 months so far and still on the first battery. I do like that better than my Fitbit and having to charge it once a week. From what I've seen on her iPad, the software is similar.
