What is the best service or app to give both the seller and I the most protection?
He will be shipping the product to me obviously.

PayPal goods and services?
I think Marketplace has some built-in protections now, but could also consider moving it to eBay or something to take advantage of their security features.

Don't pay through facebook.
Paypal is probably the best bet for the buyer, horrible for the seller and really easy to scam a seller as a buyer.

Just another thought, I have shipped tens of thousands of dollars across country to buy machine guns knowing damn well I wasn't going to see the transfer for 6 months to a couple of years. Researching the seller is your best action.
