Anthropic, OpenAI and others figured out pretty quickly that they make more money when the AI gives you an almost complete answer and then asks you a question leading you to continue the conversation.

If I have to waste tokens because the AI didn't follow my instructions, I shouldn't have to pay for those tokens. Somebody will eventually sue them over this.

yeah it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure this out. i learned this lesson the hard way when i was testing out AI systems and ran out of tokens right away.

the video generation tools are the WORST because its terrible at following directions.

i agree --- feels DELIBERATE at this point.

After burning 100 million tokens today on cline, im going out on a limb and saying there is no decent subscription. Best you can hope for is that openrouter has a good beta model for free at the time.

I used Claude Fable on Friday before it went offline. It was really, really good.

For most basic usage, Gemini or free GPT will suffice

I would never pay for it

depends on what you're doing. you can't make a blanket statement like that because AI does so many different things; many of which require a memory and structured setup for configuration and long term care-and-feeding.

a free tool may get you where you need to get temporarily, but then you're stepping off a cliff and on your own afterward.

What did you use it for? I didn't get to my projects in time before it went offline.

Legal stuff. It was just so damn slick and competent. I was very impressed by it.

Never say never.

Time is money, and if you keep going back to AI for different things my bet is eventually you will find the thing(s) that it saves you time on and you'll gladly spend the money. It's the easiest $20 I spend every month.
