Are the days of "hacking" satellite cards over?

Yes, one could argue ... why would anyone want to do it? And yes, another could argue ... it's illegal ... it's immoral ...

But I have to say ... the days of "Black Sunday" --- for those of you who remember ... and then find a solution running an emulator made it fun. Using a binary news agent reader, such as Forte Agent and waiting for discussions to happen (unlike what we have today with web based forums) and updated files ...

I want to say that if memory serves me correctly, one of the main "hackers" ended up being served with a huge lawsuit and threatened with legal action and then things went silent for a while ... and eventually died, or at least I thought so.

Has the hacking of DirecTV satellite cards become truly a thing of the past? Or is there a big "underground" network that exists that I am just now unaware of due to age and other priorities?

When Dave went down Charlie got popular with the FTA boxes. Then Charlie changed the stream and everybody went another direction. I learned more about newsgroups and found my new movie hookup. A buddy and I were talking about H, Hu and emulators today. Funny to see this thread. Were you eavesdropping at lunch?

No, but I do miss receiving a H or HU programmer in the mail and it felt like Christmas to me.

Any time our box would go out, my friends would call me, "hey man, you got a fix?"

Good times.

I remember those days. Fun times. Felt like a back alley drug deal at times.

I used to actually "like" when DTV would pop the satellite cards. At $25 and $50 a pop to get them back running, it made for (at that time) a good extra revenue stream.

The question you have to ask yourself is “why hack a card?” It was for access to content. Well, now with sharing passwords , news groups , torrents , etc; there is no need to hack Direct TV. The internet can provide you all the free content you need.

Loved that shite. I remember once I had a script that didn't actually unlock all of the ppv porn, it just let you put a credit on the card. I did like 500 for my buddies and the frickers maxed it out on a day.

I remember those days all too well. Had my Whiteviper programmer rockin... Then the infamous letter came from DTV. Anybody else get that letter? The company I got my programmer from got raided (bunch of those same types of companies got raided in the early 2000s)- DTV got all the info from everyone's orders and sent the letters threatening to sue you if you didn't "settle" with them. I wussed out and settled. Anybody else get one - if so, did you settle or just throw it away?

Never got the letter, but had a scare. Thinking the phone line to the receiver was accidentally unplugged, the wife plugged it back in. Sat like that for a week running a hacked HU card.

Luckily, nothing happened. Scared the shite out of me.

I got the letter. Threw it away and never heard from them again. How much did you settle for?

$2500 - was much younger, just started a family and career, couldn't afford to fight them if they were serious - I just wanted it to go away. There was a number to call on the letter - the guy said if it went to court, they wouldn't take anything less than $10,000 if I lost. Saw on some forums way back when, they pursued some and what they wound up having to pay was substantially more than $2500, so I caved.

Grey market IPTV services negate any need for that any more.

I'm subscribed for the year at $12 a month for 1330 TV channels including all PPV, Sunday Ticket and the rest of the major sports packages.

Several regional channels to catch any college or pro games plus all the movie channels & a rich selection of movies on demand to go with it.

Man I hate this shite:

None of the devices are illegal! Smart card readers and programmers are legit devices with legit uses. And you are not "stealing" something if you aren't depriving anyone else of something. Call it pirating or infringement, but don't call it theft/stealing.

Sorry, mini-rant over.

I threw mine away. They sent it by "regular US Postal Mail."

That scheme, is very similar to today's red light camera ticket scheme.
