Apple Will Wait Until at Least 2020 to Release a 5G iPhone

Apple Inc. plans to hold off until at least 2020 before offering an iPhone that can connect to the next generation of high-speed phone services coming next year, according to people familiar with its plans.
The delay may make it easier for rivals like Samsung Electronics Co. to win over consumers to phones that connect to 5G networks, which will provide a leap forward in mobile data speeds when they are introduced in 2019.
As with 3G and 4G, the two previous generations of mobile technology, Apple will wait as long as a year after the initial deployment of the new networks before its main product gets the capability to access them, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing the company’s plans.
Apple’s previous calculations -- proven correct -- were that the new networks and the first versions of rival smartphones would come with problems such as spotty coverage, making consumers less compelled to immediately make the jump. This time, 5G boosters argue the switch is a much bigger speed upgrade, making Apple’s decision to wait riskier. The networks will open the floodgates to new types of mobile computing, 5G advocates say.

Yeah, the wireless companies drag their feet as much as possible on infrastructure improvements. Have they even decided on a 5G standard yet or is it still more of a marketing name like the previous generations?

1) It's still a 5-6 inch screen which limits what people want to do with the device. Is 4k vs. 1080 video that big of a deal at that screen size?
2) If people are consuming 2x or more bandwidth on newly installed networks, you can bet your sweet arse the price of those Unlimited Plans will increase considerably or the throttling will start much earlier.
It's probably for profit hoarding reasons rather than consumer driven reasons, like giving themselves another year to get away from Qualcomm chips or something, but I don't think it's a big deal to most.

I believe they have already gotten away from Qualcomm with the latest generation. They are waiting on Intel (maybe even themselves) to make 5G chips that hit their target power consumption.

Samsung and Verizon just confirmed their 5G offering in the S10 for early 2019. I imagine LG will have a version as well but on what carrier is the question.
South Korea already has 5G running so this will hurt Apple where they've gained on Samsung quite a bit lately.
As per usual the US versions will sport the Qualcomm X50 and the international will use Samsung's Exynos 5G chip the 5100.

I am much more concerned about reliability than how fast a video will load. LTE (4G) seems plenty fast enough for me. Hell, even 3G in a pinch is fine.
So I understand if Apple is waiting for 1) infrastructure and 2) an industry standard for 5G before jumping in.

Commerical only.

I can tell you that Intel chips have been used in most of our 5G testing. Not saying the others are bad.

And I'm just telling you what's inside the Galaxy S10.

If it is anything like the 4G rollout, the first few phones are going to blow and the infrastructure isn't going to be able to support much anyway.
Anyone like me that suffered with a HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon should have some horror stories, I ended up returning it and going back to my HTC Incredible til something better came out.

And?
Congrats on non-optimized shite?
Erricson and Nokia (the two biggest 5G vendors) have barely worked with that chip on mock/live networks. I would know I WORK FOR NOKIA.

How in the world would you know anything about Samsung's unreleased 5G chip that hasn't even been announced?
Samsung literally just debuted it yesterday in Korea during a live video call demonstration when they turned on the 5G networks over there.
And the Qualcomm X50 chip that's going to be in almost every phone next year isn't new, been around since this summer and adopted by most for their 2019 phones btw.
quote:
Qualcomm has confirmed which companies will be using their 5G Snapdragon X50 modems in their devices, from next year onwards. The list includes a number of top technology companies; it was also reportedly leaked in February of this year. However, it’s only now that the companies have confirmed the same.
The list contains Asus, Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Connected Technologies Limited, HMD Global, HTC, Inseego / Novatel Wireless, LG, NetComm Wireless, NETGEAR, Oppo, Sharp Corporation, Sierra Wireless, Sony Mobile, Telit, vivo, Wingtech, WNC, Xiaomi and ZTE.
Samsung will use their 5G 5100 Exynos chip in their international devices like usual. This is why my S8+ and S9+ are international versions, the Exynos chips offer better performance and battery life than the monopolized Qualcomm US variants and I would imagine this stays the same. Exynos > Qualcomm
