I am considering getting the wife an Apple Watch for Christmas. She is a nurse and I think she would enjoy being able to see messages on her wrist when she can't get to her phone. She currently wears a basic digital watch (as she has to have it to time heart rates etc)

Is their any reason to get the Apple Watch 2 or is the 1 basically the same? I'm not particularly worried about the water resistance, anything else I'm missing?

Target has series 1 for $269 with $50 gift card and series 2 is $100 more with no gift card.

Thoughts?

At this point I'd get series 2. The CPU in the series 1 is almost 2 years old.

If she wants/needs water proofing and gps, get series 2. Otherwise go with Series 1. The Series 1 did get a processor upgrade from the original, it just isn't waterproof or have gps.

From wiki:
quote:

The SiP in Apple Watch Series 1 is called S1P and looks superficially identical to the S1, but it seems to include most of the new features of the Apple S2 save for GPS functionality. For instance it contains the same dual-core CPU with the same new GPU capabilities as the S2 making it about 50% faster than the S1.

Save the $ and get a series 1. There's no functional difference on a day to day basis she'll need.

Ditto - wife is also a nurse. Decided to get her one. I ended up getting the series 2 just so she had the flexibility to do what she wanted and not worry about it getting wet. Agree that software is the same. I will say also that I got myself a series 2 and felt bad if I bought her the series 1. Hahaha

Series 2 is a bit more responsive, but the water resistance and GPS are the only features that potentially justify the price. If these are not important (don't seem to be), then go with Series 1.

I have the 1 and you have to be within 30 ft or less from your phone to receive calls and texts. Disappointed me a little when discovered. Maybe the 2 improved on this. Or maybe its just limitations of bluetooth.

I have a series 1 also and do not have this problem. As long as both your phone and watch on a previously connected wifi they can receive messages and calls. Bluetooth does not necessarily have to be connected

nope

Then you are wrong.

He specifically said his wife's a nurse and he'd like her to see messages when she can't get to her phone.

Thanks for input. I usually like the newest tech...but that's a huge difference

Does 1st have no gps at all for tracking jogging etc?

no gps.

i like the fitbit for its simplicity. i use it to workout, and i can see peoples text/calls. it doesn't have the fancy bells and whistles like the apple watch, but for that reason is why i have a phone.

Yeah cause the ability to make a quick reply to a text when no phone is available won't be a big plus in picking a smart watch for his nurse wife...

BTW what else can your fitbit not do?

Target also offers $50 gift card with purchase of series 1....I think that's the route I'm gonna go.

If it was me, i'd get the new one...but she won't know the difference

If your wife is a nurse that means she is washing her hands numerous times during a shift.

That right there can justify having something more water resistant. Get the 2

ETA: the Apple 2 watches are sold out FYI. Most stores show it won't be available until Jan 3; online shows it won't be shipped until dec 29-Jan 3. I was gonna celebrate a new job by treating myself to an Apple Watch....was gonna buy the 2 this past Saturday until I found that out.
