Because Apple actually approves of it.

How do you know this?
Companies patent all kinds of shite all the time, even stuff they don't use.
They could have patented it so that other companies can't do it.
They could have patented it so that if someone else makes a product to do something similar, regardless of whether it's for a phone or not, they can get licensing fees for it.
Among companies these days, the general procedure is if you think of something, patent it, because that patent bolsters your intellectual property.
Just because Apple patents something doesn't mean they will ever use it or even approve of it being used.

Love the ignorant, short sighted comments here. Look at all of the, "shot by iPhone," video commercials. Look at the wild, rampant popularity and usage of Periscope and FB Live.
Think about what kids and adults can do at an LSU Football Game with decent seats? You think the SEC Network, ESPN, the NFL etc aren't concerned about attendance and ratings now? Wait till people start live broadcasting using 4K iPhone 6+ and Androids on Periscope and FB Live from decent seats in stadiums.
Like it or not there are some legitimate use cases for this tech. The potential for draconian overuse exists. But there are potential uses that are beneficial.

Who in the frick would want to watch a game via some moron who can't hold his iPhone straight for 4 hours instead of just finding an ESPN stream?
Go on youtube right now and find a clip of a game shot from a cell phone and tell me with a straight face you'd want to sit there and watch that for 4 hours straight instead of finding an ESPN stream.

The funny part will be when Apple talks about how awesome and essential this new feature is and the Apple sheep just lap it up.

So image stabilized 4K content has been around for that long? Periscope and FB Live haven't proven the ability of technology to make this perhaps not viable but potentially disruptive enough that it can become a problem?

It isn't about image stabilization as much as it is someone having to hold the camera up for that long. If you want a clear shot, you're gonna have to be holding the phone well over your head to avoid the guy in front of you standing up at times, etc. Anyone attempting to use tripods and stuff like that is going to be easily caught. And then you have awful crowd noise.
I just don't see someone risking spending tons of money on awesome seats at a football game just to hold up a camera and stream the game and potentially getting kicked out and/or banned from other games.
More likely would be someone figuring out how to pipe an ESPN stream through a Periscope feed, or simply pointing their camera at the ESPN feed; as terribly lo-fi as that would be, it sounds a lot better than watching someone stream from the stadium...
