App Developers

Looking to develop an app, I have no clue where to begin. Obviously someone would be creating this app for me as well as maintain the technical support for it.
Any ideas on cost, any suggestions on developers?
I’m in NW Louisiana.

Well, you can hire a company to do it for you (very expensive) or you can hire a freelancer from places like fiverr or oDesk. Really depends on how much money you want to spend.
My company is getting bids right now for an Android & iOS app and we're looking at 300-600k FYI.

Upwork. Doing this now. Streamlines the whole process and allows for escrow option - which stupidly I did not choose. I came to this board first like you cause wanted to give work to someone "affiliated" with in some way - even if its LSU TD. But better to go to people that freelance - not people who may consider it.

You should try Envoc in BR....they quoted us a couple hundred grand for a basic mobile time ticketing system. That included some knowledge transfer to in house IT and a couple months of support I think.
More support can be had for more money.
We haven't pulled the trigger yet but I think we will at some point next year.

Previous company I worked for did several projects with Envoc. They do really good work.

If you hire American make sure they are doing the work and not farming it out to Indian developers. Several years ago I had this experience and I just told the guy “listen just give me their names and I’ll talk to them myself.” He was a PhD from Indiana but old as eff and I could tell he was basically relaying messages from guys he subcontracted to to me and I was like what the hell my paying you for? With a pork those type of scumbags have less power but communicating with someone from India even though they supposedly speak English is not easy. Horrible accident and cultural diffences

communicating with India is a skill you must learn in tech development as it's hard to make money here with development labor.

I used to develop apps for mobile phones it's expensive also you need to find out how many different code bases. this is where the expense comes as android and apple use different code. using the right code though depending on requirements you can get down to one code base on multiple platforms
is this app your business idea? ig so I wouldn't want to outsource that as you want the control and flexibility to grow thr app/business without a third party it should be your business core competency.
if you're creating an app for an existing business I must ask why not a mobile friendly site? then use a shell app to display mobile friendly sites. of done right it will feel like they're in an application without any extra work.

Yes it is a business idea, I might take the mobile friendly route as it would be much cheaper.

Why is app development so expensive? Those numbers are mind blowing.

Programming is a valuable skill, and writing a custom app takes a long time.
For comparison, AAA games have movie sized development budgets. Tens of millions.
Half a million dollars, you're only talking about maybe 5000 man-hours. A team of five will burn through that in 6 months.

Apps are the future of commerce, and GOOD code is difficult. Everyone seems to think that the "idea" is the important aspect - in reality ideas are a dime a dozen.

Because a SOB cooking french fries at McDonald's can't do it.
