Any recent experience with Dell XPS laptops?

Looking at the current XPS 17 inch model.
Reading reviews and some people report the machine runs hot.
Also concerned that the fans might be loud.
I don't do any gaming, but I do software development and run a lot of RAM-intensive apps (i.e. SQL Server, Visual Studio, etc.)
TIA

I'm still running the 2019 13" xps. No problems other than just changing the battery a month ago. It has been a good everyday work computer.

Ive been looking into the XPS system and it seems highly sought after and has decent reviews.

I have one that's about 5 years old. I like the form factor and build quality, but it runs really hot and the battery life sucks.

Why would you want to lug around a 17" laptop? Get a docking station and monitor for office use.

Just bought a 13” for the office. Have a 15” from 17 or so.
I have no experience with the 17”
Build quality remains high. Most comparable would be an Apple MacBook Air or MS Surface Laptop.
They moved to soldered RAM in the last iteration update throughout the lineup if I remember correctly, so buy what you need up front. Just about everyone does this now. I don’t intend to make that sound like a negative.
13” has only two USB-C ports. Includes dongles for a few things. But factor that in if you use peripherals.
The charger is USB-c and can be replaced with a GaN charger for cheap. It takes up one of your USB ports but can pretty easily use a replicator/dock to charge while also allowing access to the port.
The “sky” color is aptly named and is more blue than grey in person but more grey than blue in photographs online. The user happens to be my brother. I refer to his laptop as “space gay” in color. He usually doesn’t laugh. For reference- my daily driver is an m1 MacBook Air in rose gold (mint returned model was like $700 at Best Buy less than 6m after launch, so i happily bought the pink one and have been the recipient of similar color critiques).
Other than that, screen is fine. The internals are the same as everyone else uses, and the battery life is very good. The 13” does feel a little small. The next set of laptops I went with were Lenovo Thinkpad T14. Plastic instead of aluminum, slightly heavier. The famed nub-mouse is still there. It’s 14”, so not up to what you’re considering, but it’s a great case/screen/battery/aftermarketkeyboard parts machine, and that’s really the difference from brand to brand.
Doesn’t seem like GPU is necessary, but XPS has some availability, I don’t think the t14 does. The Lenovo x1 may, but those are quite a bit pricier (and I am unsure about form factors)

Look at the Dell Precision models at Dell refurbished.com and see what specials coupons they’re running. Better build quality than the consumer laptops.

I'm typing this from a '22 XPS 15. It's my primary work machine and has been nothing but solid. Fans aren't bad, battery life isn't the longest, it's not the lightest, (none of which I'd expect) but otherwise it performs excellent and no real issues to report. Build quality is there. No Ethernet or USB A ports. Display is really nice, mine has the touchscreen that I hardly ever use. Another thing I've liked about this machine is the touchpad; it's large and works really well.

I have a 23' 13" XPS for work. i7, 32gb ram, it does great. Battery life is ok, it charges quick. I like the keyboard, I'd put it up there with my MacBook keyboard which is high praises.

We have several people here running CAD on Precision 7560s for the last year (these are 15-inch machines) and none have complained about heating issues yet.
I'm a long-time laptop gamer, and have had 17-inch systems before. I love the screen size but they can be awkward and weighty bastards. If you're really needing a bigger screen size with that sort of mobility, I would suggest looking at a 16-inch in whatever you get.

This. Mine lasted about 4 years before the battery was too weak. I've bought Dells for many years, but I don't think I'm buying them anymore. I currently have the Microsoft laptop and it's nice, but not as fast/powerful as I'd like. Still looking for that laptop with speed, power, and a great battery life.
