I'm just curious baws, subtracting the geek factor, custom roms, messing with the config, launchers, etc. what is the Android advantage here?
I assume choice as there are plenty.
Outside of what I already mentioned in prior posts the other concern with Android is security and hardened apps. I am not suggesting that IOS does not let some apps slip through that have ill intent but it appears to me your data can be more easily compromised installing a larger amount of available apps on Android.

I switched to Android from iPhone a few years ago for a few reasons. I'm not a tech geek, so that didn't play into it at all. I mostly just got sick of Apple. All the pre-loaded apps you can't delete, the performance degradation with each new iOS release, iTunes becoming a colossal POS, etc.
That Apple fatigue coincided with Google launching their Google Fi cell service and me getting sick of dealing with AT&T. My Nexus 6 came with pre-loaded apps, but I was free to delete them, Google customer service has been great, I get better functionality across other Google platforms I use. The iPhone was the only Apple product I owned at the time, so it really made no sense to stay with it. I've since bought an iPad, and my wife and oldest kid are still on iPhones. I also have an Apple TV, so I'm not completely without Apple in my house.

I went the Android route a ways back when the screens got bigger and used Android for years. I came to hate the misc phones for usually having a worse version of an app and performance. Went back to IOS when Apple started making bigger screens.

1. Kodi
2. Widgets on the springboard
3. Have two apps open simulatenously and split screen
4. Snooze individual alerts
5. Better versatility interfacing with any PC apps
6. Using your phone like an external hard drive (i.e., no iTunes)
7. Literally customize anything (Icons, Icon placement, any app on the phone, including the phone itself, swipe gestures, button/ screen tap combinations, lock screen, etc).

And yet none of those, alone or in combination, make me think about switching.
I'm with Mo Jeaux on this one. Maybe the Pixel 3 XL will become the 'Droid's leading representative but as long as it's samsung and with my previous experience, na.

I love Android, and Samsung would not be in my top 5.

I'm an Android guy. I had iPhones until the iPhone 5. Got sick of the phone getting worse with every update, battery deteriorating tremendously over time, and the crappy preloaded apps.
I switched to a Samsung s6 active, and got a pixel 2 last year. I'm not a techie, but I still enjoy the customization of Android. If you don't have one you can't really understand how useful things like home screen widgets, always on display, changing default apps, different launchers, and the app drawer are. Android has so many small things it adds, that the experience is vastly superior in my opinion.
My wife still has an iphone 6s, and she loves it. We did have to do a battery swap on it, but I did that myself. It is funny to me that she talks about how much she loves apple, but she uses mostly Google apps. Google maps, Gboard, Google photos, YouTube music, and Gmail are all her primary apps. I am definitely jealous of iMessage, but hopefully rcs will eventually take care of that.
I can see the pros and cons of both, but for the people who always say they prefer iPhone because they are simple and "just work" I hand them my pixel 2 and show them how awesome it is

Google Assistant has a sexier voice and is somewhat playful. Siri OTOH won't go on a date with me. Android >>>>> Apple.
