Amazon pussies whining about climate change and want to shut down Ring

An Amazon software engineer named Max Eliaser is calling for the shutdown of Ring, the doorbell camera company Amazon paid $2 billion for in 2018.
Hundreds of Amazon employees recently banded together to form Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, an organization dedicated to holding the company’s feet to the fire when it comes to taking the steps necessary to face the global climate crisis. The group published a post on Medium yesterday sharing its members’ views on climate change, but Eliaser apparently felt the need to speak out on a different subject.

The deployment of connected home security cameras that allow footage to be queried centrally are simply not compatible with a free society. The privacy issues are not fixable with regulation and there is no balance that can be struck. Ring should be shut down immediately and not brought back.

Whatever about the climate change, but Ring has been really Orwellian since Amazon bought them.

That said, I do have ring and echo devices myself, but I plan to replace them as the open/DIY systems mature. Given similar function, I'd take the system that I control completely every time.
And it's hilarious that there's a huge list of quotes from employees about climate change, and this dude randomly throws in his two cents about privacy.

As opposed to that Amazon-created privacy invention Alexa?
I'm glad he only sees Ring as an intrusion.

I don't use any of those services for obvious reasons.
How about they secure the platform first.

I just seperate my devices with a vlan and then keep them from accessing the internet. To access our cameras, we just VPN into our home network, etc.
Edt: It is funny how much these devices want to send data to AWS. Those devices are all so damn noisy.

@Kork check out the Amcrest doorbell camera. supports RTSP and ONVIF, no need for online storage.
I never got a doorball cam for this reason. Think it's the only one that supports a user's local NVR. I have mine 24/7 recording on Blue Iris.

RIng is a cut above, but dismissing him because he doesn't speak out against all of Amazon's shortcomings is illogical.

Ring isn't just a product that allows users to surveil their neighbors. The company also uses it to surveil its customers.
An investigation by EFF of the Ring doorbell app for Android found it to be packed with third-party trackers sending out a plethora of customers’ personally identifiable information (PII). Four main analytics and marketing companies were discovered to be receiving information such as the names, private IP addresses, mobile network carriers, persistent identifiers, and sensor data on the devices of paying customers.
The danger in sending even small bits of information is that analytics and tracking companies are able to combine these bits together to form a unique picture of the user’s device. This cohesive whole represents a fingerprint that follows the user as they interact with other apps and use their device, in essence providing trackers the ability to spy on what a user is doing in their digital lives and when they are doing it. All this takes place without meaningful user notification or consent and, in most cases, no way to mitigate the damage done. Even when this information is not misused and employed for precisely its stated purpose (in most cases marketing), this can lead to a whole host of social ills.

He has a point. Amazon employees have been selling data that Ring devices are recording to the cloud.
Who knows how many compromising videos or how many criminals have been able to completely case a house just by giving an amazon employee a few bucks to give them the videos.
At least he isn't claiming for it to be done via government force. People just need to wise up and take personal security AND privacy more seriously.

Yep, SWAN has one too that we use.
You run Blue Iris on its own box or in a VM? I've tried to limit my "power consumption" this past year and just threw it in a Windows10 VM I already had running.

I have BI and my tv DVR (SiliconDust) running on the host OS. I have a VM running home assistant on this PC as well.

I like my Ring devices, I get pretty good recs on Amazon too.
I wouldn't want to put any inside my house though. I do like my Alexa device in the kitchen, I have gone back and forth about it being there though.
I mean we all have cell phones which do the exact same shite, it's hard to escape this problem.

Im always moving Home Assistant around.
Started on just a Pi and even ran in Docker on my FreeNAS box, I've finally put everything in one box though. Run in a Debian VM now.

i threw all my foscams and blue iris in the trash a few years ago after UNGODLY amounts of frustration.
i literally would have every single feature available going and then it would just break and further break and then i'd have to factory reset everything and start all over again.
i'm sure things have gotten better and i blame most of this on camera firmware issues from foscam even though i think they bought the blue iris app.

If you have an android phone, you at least have the option to remove the stock OS and all the spying features and install a custom ROM with those items stripped out and options to prevent any new apps from having access to anything.
