So I've got an older 4Runner that I am looking to replace the head unit for. I know the Chinese brands from places like cartrimhome look more OBM but have more bugs. The reliable brands like Sony, Pioneer, etc just look so damn bad. Anyone have any advice or suggestions?

All aftermarket double din head units look about the same to me. What features are you looking to get. Wireless bluetooth, volume knob, etc? I have an Alpine in my 1st Gen Tundra.

Go to trailgridpro website and pick one. I got a Sony Av6000. They prewire and set up all of your steering controls ahead of time. You just pop the trim off unbolt the factory head unit and swap it. Can be done in a few minutes.

Did it myself in my gen3 4Runner. Easy as swapping a din1 in all my vehicles growing up.

It's such a pita for my gen5 i haven't done it but I really would love to swap in a wireless carplay/android unit.

Newer vehicles like the 4runner require an entire facade swap as well so you have to get a unit specific to your model.

I bought my wife an iDoing for her Subaru that all the kids on the WRX forums swear by and it was only like $300 but I haven't put it in yet. It's a Christmas break project.

Having said that if it goes well I would strongly consider the 4runner idoing unit but it's closer to $600 so I've been a little hesitant.

ETA here's the idoing 4Runner unit. Don't take my word, go read up on it and watch a couple YT install videos.

Pretty big difference between these two looks imo

I'm not worried about the install. They all come with prewired units that are basically plug and play. I'm worried about the functionality after install.

Idoing is known for having a solid unit that doesn't get slower over time.

2018 4Runner-- I don't recommend the roadanvi units from Amazon. Their UI sucks when it works. Every third or 4th key on cycle the wifi will not connect and carplay along with it. Really sucked on our big trip back in May. I do like it more than the oem unit, which for a gps was trash.

1st one is not a double din. I was thinking you wanted one to fit in the dash similar to OEM.

I love wireless car play and android auto so much I would buy a new car if I had to to get it.

Nobody should have to suction cup their phone to their windshield in 2025 to have a decent gps but that's what I'm doing right now.

I'd try Crutchfield. My wife called them and they sent a Pioneer (if I can remember) unit with speakers, adapters and posi-lok connectors for a complete installation. Great advice and a good compatible system.

Went through this recently with my 2008 4runner. Wanted carplay but didn't want to dump a bunch of money into it. This has been great and is consistently on crutchfields top list. Sony XAV AX3200

4Runner Carplay Headunits

Did this recently, took about 30 minutes and looks like its factory. Works great. Find the one for your year
