My son currently has an Ender-3. We are thinking about going to one with an auto leveler. Manual leveling is driving me nuts. Here are my questions:

1. Is it worth it?
2. What is a decent one?
3 Any market for my Ender-3?

Thanks.

Get a Bambu P1S; convert the ender 3 to a laser engraver

I’ve had the P1s for a month with 0 prior 3d printing experience. I’ve only done ~30 prints but have had no problems, it just works. I assume more elaborate prints will present problems.

Coming from Ender 3 for a few years to a Bambu A1, I would recommend the Bambu as well. Very reasonably priced and they work well. The Ender has its place, but from a speed and ease of use standpoint, it was a great move for me.

Like everyone else said, go with Bambu. It’s 10000% worth it over continually upgrading an Ender.

I started with ender, added auto (BLTouch) leveling, then all kinds of other upgrades chasing better print results and ease of use.

Finally got a Bambu, and now I would never consider an ender style printer ever again. Even if you just get an A1 or A1 Mini it will make your life way easier

I like the Bambu A1 for $399. Not sure I want to go much more than that. I assume I can add the multi-color option later? Thanks.

Yes you can add the AMS (multicolor attachment) after the fact. I have the X1C with AMS but honestly I rarely use it for multicolor. I do use it for auto refill if one spool runs out mid print though.

That is all greek to me. I am going to let my son figure all of that out. Thank everyone for your help.

Bambu A1 is all you need. Great printer. I have that and the A1 mini.

I received an ender 3 VE for Christmas. So far I've not had too many issues doing prints.

Where did you guys start seeing limitations?

A1 is definitely a great cheap place to start if all you are planning to do is PLA. P1S if you need to print with more difficult materials.

I use multi color all the time now, from coins, to figures, to cruise ducks, and can't forget big brick lego minifigures. I rarely go above 8 colors, but I have the ability to do 16 now with the multiple printers and AMSes I have at my disposal now. I have been saving up my makerworld points to get the H2D when it comes out.

It's like the difference between a Linux laptop and a macbook. You are more in a walled garden with the Apple, but the dang thing is stupid simple and works awesome just out of the box without having to mess with upgrades. The big difference between Bambu and Apple is repairs and parts are cheap and simple with Bambu. Plus Bambu doesn't charge obscene prices like Apple.

What do you think my ender-3 is worth? $100? After researching it, I am not interested in converting it to an engraver.

It's worth whatever you can get someone to pay for it. I wouldn't pay for one, it's worth nothing to me. Maybe a donation to a school. See what they are selling for on facebook marketplace.

this whole thread makes me uncomfortable.

i feel like the old man who yells at clouds; the 3D printing thing has gone over my head so far. I still am amazed that postscript fonts on the Apple Laserwriter 300 aren't jaggy!

are 3D printer prices now within the range of the common man?

all i know about 3D printers is everything they produced used to have a ton of flashing around the parts you had to cut off and the government freaked out because people were passing around "PDFs?" of firearm parts that could be created so suddenly possessing those blueprints became illegal.

eta oh and i forgot the great poster pongze on here mailed me 2 ingenius parts he created that would allow me to turn my arcade 8 way joystick into a 4 way joystick just by lifting the joystick and rotating it.

makes burgertime, pacman and donkey kong so much easier to play.

Some printers have put in software to identify when you are printing a known firearm part and will refuse to print it.

I mostly print what is known as useless 3d junk. Basically articulating nonsense, random toys, trophies for different things, and challenge coins. I have found a niche market for truck brackets and parts for lighting and cameras and such. It brings in enough to support my 3d print junk habit.
