I have a 2012 macbook pro that has started crashing and re-booting a lot recently. Sometimes it will not start up again after crashing and makes a beeping noise.

After doing a little research, the beeping noise indicates a RAM issue. Replaced the RAM about 6 months ago and it seemed to help, but now it's back to crashing a lot.

My very uneducated guess is that there is a problem with the RAM slots that are soldered to the logic board.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Any chance this could be fixed without replacing the logic board? (Costly part to replace i assume)

Is this computer worth being professionally diagnosed and repaired? Should I cut my losses and just get a new one?

Dude your laptop is nine years old. That's like 85 in human years.

Could be a hard drive issue. I'd try swapping in an economy SSD. You can clone your existing hard drive onto it. If it is the hard drive failing you need to act quick while it is still working sometimes.

9 years is a good run for a laptop. Time to cut your losses and start planning for an upgrade.

Tend to agree with those saying to get a new one. Just wondering if this thing is worth trying to squeeze a few more years out of.

It's a gamble. If you are confident about the beep being about RAM and you already replaced it then it doesn't look good. Usually with that model I would try putting a new $30 SSD in there first.

I would not go down the path of replacing motherboard parts or sending it to somebody like Louis Rossman. If it were newer, then sure, do it.

Reason: Even if you fix it you are not going to get much more life out of it. Other parts will fail. The latest OS you can install on it will get more and more out of date. App updates are going to start to become incompatible and so on.

I had the same laptop. Amazon has a ribbon that costs like $13. I changed it and it works again.

Try reseating the RAM. It's pretty easy. You just remove the back panel, unplug the battery and RAM then plug it back in. There are many videos on YouTube showing you how to do this. If that doesn't fix the problem, then I would replace the device.

Amazon has the new one on sale right now: LINK

I've done this numerous times actually. Think it's time to replace. Just didn't want to go spend $1000+ on a new one without having some other opinions.

Anyone have input on whether to get the Macbook Air or Pro? Could care less about the touchbar on the pro, but is the fan worth it?? Would having better cooling with a fan improve the longevity? That'd be main reason I might spring for the pro.

A 16in is probably out of my price range...thanks though

Anyone have an opinion on whether to go with a pro or air? Lots of stuff I'm reading indicates that they're pretty darn similar.

My only concern with the replacement is that you may miss the 15.4" screen if you go with a 13" mb air or pro.

If you think that may be the case then you could wait until the 14" comes out. Otherwise, the M1 air is great. It is so low power and doesn't have any moving parts. Complete silent - yet will run faster than your 2012 mbp.

edit: also, you may miss the magsafe. Its one of the reasons I'm waiting on the new models to replace my 2013 mbp.

Hmmm... didn't even think about that. I might see if i can squeeze a few more months out of this thing and wait on a new version. It's lasted about 6-7 months since this problem first started. Lets see if we can go for 3 more months...
