..still holds massive clout in 2026.
The most dominant resolution for web streaming and PC gaming to this day.

I just bought a ViewSonic 1080p monitor for my Commodore 64 Ultimate. High quality and relatively cheap. Who'd a thunk a 1080p monitor could make 8-bit graphics look so good?

I haven't bought a physical disc in a decade or more outside of the occasional used game for my kids' console
ETA this what keeps you awake at 3am?

Well, as our eyes get older we seem to be able to distinguish less of them pixels and such.

Despite the year, disc media quality still blows away online streaming quality. Quite sad.

best thing you can do is rip your own bluray/4k movies (or source from someone who already has) and play that on your local network.
again, piracy blah blah but if the industry would FIX THIS shite, people would be alot less likely to pirate stuff.
apple and spotify 'fixed' the music problem by giving people 'decent qualty' music via streaming.
didn't really fix it for me..i prefer FLAC so i keep my own music library and the devils that exist because of that but it works for my needs.
online streaming companies know full well their services (outside of a few boutique streaming companies) can't jam the 4K quality experience over unpredictable internet connections so they provide a disk so people that really like a movie will break down and buy the physical media.
thats just a damn shame. life finds a way and for the other 95% of the world who thinks they should be able to have a digitized version of their video library and NOT A 1990S STACK OF DISKS PILED IN A CORNER AND A PHYSICAL MECHANICAL SPINNING DEVICE...well we found a solution anyway so these media companies can frick right off.
FIX.
YOUR.
PRODUCT.

On the back of the Sony decision, i fully expect major studios to stop producing physical discs before 2030.

i confess; i bought my son an xbox 's' and a gamepass subscription.
probably the best move i ever made. we haven't bought a single disk and other than space issues, he pretty much plays anything he likes..including Halo Evolved that just came out 4 days ago all included in the 'monthly streaming' bill for xbox thats like $16/mo i think.
game progress, etc is all stored on the cloud so even if 'the halo collection' takes up 50% of our space and he wants the new forza, he can delete and go back & forth and doesn't lose progress in either game.
reinstall a game you havent touched in 2 years and you pick right up where you left off.
yes i'm a sucker buying into a subscription but i would aruge we have gotten FAR MORE entertainment from this than we ever did picking apart neftlix for hours trying to find that ONE SHOW everyone would agree on to watch.
