Multiple reports stating that Zach Steffen qualified for his work permit and will return to Manchester City as their #2
Here is NBCSN
quote:

United States men’s national team starting goalkeeper Zack Steffen will not be loaned by Manchester City next season, according to ESPN. Steffen, 25, is set to back up Ederson for Pep Guardiola’s side next season after a year on loan to Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga.

This is good news. Hopefully he can get some good time in during some of the minor cups and maybe a few PL apps.

It's good that a team of City's stature rates him, but as bad as this sounds, the only way it's good for his progress is if Ederson gets a significant injury.

Steffen is supposed to be our #1 keeper and if he isn't playing routinely, that's a problem.

Let’s be honest he will be loaned back out

He needs to play every week if he’s going to be our #1 on the national team

Only country it really works for is Argentina

I normally don't disagree, but when it comes to being part of a huge club, I think it is sometimes a different case.

If Pep fricking Guardiola wants you on his squad, who the hell is ANYONE within the USSF to say you all of a sudden aren't a good enough player to represent the USA?

And that isn't me being brash towards you, bud. That is me expressing discontent with the USMNT in general over the past several years. I have a hard time thinking there is anyone on our continent with the resume to say Steffen isn't good enough because he isn't the starter, but is the backup, for a team competing for league and European Cups under a legendary manager.

With other American talents, they haven't usually been with the bigger clubs as backups. They typically get loaned out like Steffen did. The way I feel about it is that if ANYONE should play on a national team that is a backup at the club level, GK is probably the safest position to allow to do so.

Steffen communicates well and has chemistry with our player pool already. He has the natural ability, and will be getting world-class training now. I see his staying with City as a net-positive for the USMNT.

Bravo is gone after this year. Muric will almost certainly be the one that’s loaned.

This could change, but the idea was for Steffen to be the no. 2 when he came here whether you want to believe it or not.

If he can impress in the games he gets he will get a good move afterwards which is the ultimate play here.

Loan to Leeds would be a cheeky move. Kiko is almost certainly gone and we’ll need to bring in comp for Meslier. Martinez from Arsenal was linked but thats off due to the Leno injury.

I like the idea of it.

Train every day against elite attackers. Learn a system that requires you to be an elite distributor and play out of the back.

Then I think about the USMNT and our inept manager and the thought of our national team trying to play out of the back is high comedy.

So maybe he'll eventually be sold to a mid to low table side behind a leaky back 4 where his primary task is shot stopping and lots of it- because when it comes down to brass tacks that's the primary skill we need for the USMNT.

I was thinking the other day how you never hear goalies yell “push up” or “press up” before a goal kick anymore. So much playing out the back these days.

At this point of his career he has that or he doesn’t

Especially using his feet

And he don’t got it

He won't be at the standard of Ederson, but playing out from the back doesn't require elite technical skills. It does require technique, but if there is a system in place where the GK knows he needs to go with the ball, that can mitigate any technical deficiency. For example, Arsenal under Emery played it out from Leno, but the positioning of his forward options caused all sorts of problems for Leno even though he is capable on the ball.

Unless Steffen's kicking is so bad that he can't kick it at all, that won't necessarily prevent him from working within the system. Even then, a keeper like Szczesny isn't the best at passing, but is still able to play for teams who want to play the possession game.

All I'm saying is that he doesn't need to be at the level of Ederson or Neuer with the ball at his feet. The options for a GK are generally simpler because it is functionally impossible for a defending team to cover every option available for a team unless the offensive team has incredibly poor positioning.

Game experience, especially for a keeper, is hella important.

He's a 25 year-old keeper.

You need to relax.

What sucks is Keller and Friedel being born around the same time frame

Aka should be getting ready to enter his prime

If he doesn’t have that part of technical ability he isn’t going going to get it

It’s not a knock on him at all

Probably just a larger look at how players are developed here

A keeper's prime typically doesn't start until 29/30.
