I seem to jinx whoever I root for.

So I am now rooting for Brazil.

Players like Messi have come and go before, and they will again. He's a once in a generation talent, but in 20 years there will be another player just like him. Zidane was just as much of a goal scoring threat, but he was also a much more rounded player. He could score from anywhere on the pitch with either foot, he was much more of an arial threat when in the box, he was a box-to-box midfielder that defended as well as attacked, he could drop back and play the withheld CM role as well as any player ever.

Zidane was a one time talent, so far. No player has ever been a threat in every facet of the game like he was.

I was trying to think about this the other day when my wife asked the same question. I came to the conclusion that I like every team but Brazil. I guess if I had to rank who I would like to see win:

1. Belgium - they beat us with class
2. Germany - Have always pulled for Germany
3. Argentina - Messi
4. Netherlands - Have always enjoyed watching them
5. Colombia - Fun to watch
6. France - "Heritage"
7. Costa Rica - Underdogs, but I may be sick if they pull of the upset of all upsets and win a WC before the US.

This is just asinine on so many levels.

You can say Messi isn't the best player in the world or all-time, fine. What you said above is just dumb.

Yep. Hazard and Courtois are some of my favorite players. Belgium all the way.

How so? Maradona was messi 30 years ago. Talented attackers like messi will come along every 20-30 years.

So to prove your "point" that players like Messi are not THAT uncommon, you compare him to a top 3 player in the world.

Ok...

Go back and show me where I said they were common. I said players like messi have been around before, like maradona. It's not like I said they come around every 5 years.

I never said you said that they were common, but you are acting like Messi's talent isn't special compared to Zidane which is stupid.

Belgium. Currently in studying here. And they have 3 Spurs players.

Then Holland. Really love the parts of it I've seen and the people, and though they don't have my favorite player on the team anymore, VdV, I still enjoy rooting for them.

What Messi does today is infinitely more impressive than what Maradonna did. Space doesn't exist on the field like it used to.

Now you're putting words in my mouth. I never said messi wasn't special. In fact, I've already said he's a once in a generation talent, but to say that there's never been another player with his skill set is ridiculous. Maradona and messi are almost clones. Neymar and CR are both in the discussion, talentwise, with him though he is better than both of them.

There has NEVER been a player that had Zidane's box to box ability, IMO. Zidane is probably in the discussion (I.e top 10 or so) of greatest: skill on the ball, finishing ability, passing, movement off the ball, free kick ability, arial ability, and penalties. He was also a solid defender for a true Cm and not a CDM.

ETA: I've also said I think Messi is top 10 all time already, and probably top 5 if I really thought about it. Just because you think he's the best all time doesn't make anything I've said untrue or stupid.
