Will Ronaldo win the Balloon d'Or if Portugal wins Euro 2012?

Will that be enough to prevent Messi from winning his fourth in a row?
ETA What if Italy wins it? Does Pirlo have a shot? He was massively instrumental in Juventus' Serie A title and his impact on Italy in this tournament can't be emphasized enough.

Messi, Messi, Messi, Messi. Portugal must win the Euro, and he must score in this match, or a hypothetical final.

I agree.
Side note: if Messi wins his fourth, he'll have the most all-time at the age of 25.
Right now he's tied at 3 with Cruyff, Platini and van Basten.

I don't think this tournament has any bearing on it especially since Messi isn't playing. If Ronaldo wins it, it's because of the 2-1 victory over Barca in April that essentially clinched them the title. I think he scored the winning goal in that game if I remember correctly.

Not only that, Portugal is lucky to be in the finals. If they didn't get that last minute goal against the Danes we wouldn't be having this discussion. Then he gets a weak Czech team in the first round.
If he loses to Spain, which is essentially Barcelona minus Messi, does that automatically give Messi the Balloon d'Or then??

It isn't fair to Ronaldo if you left it out. The European Championship is one of, if not the, biggest football tournaments in existence. It consists of the highest caliber competitors (strictly speaking of international competitions). The award is meant to go to the footballer who has performed the best over the calendar year. Not the year minus the competitions in which the other candidates didn't get to play in.

Even if Ronaldo does win the Euros, it isn't a guarantee he'll win the award. Messi just had possibly the greatest single season in competitive football history.

Personally as of now I think it goes to Messi, and rightfully so, however, if ( I know big if) CR turns in two more dominating performances and Portugal wins Euro 2012.....you would almost have to give it to him. Just my two cents but as stated by other posters this is one of the biggest competitions and must be taken into account.

This. Winning the Euros is enough to push Ronaldo past Messi, assuming he doesn't screw it up in the fall. Pirlo may be a contender for World XI, but he doesn't stack up to Messi or Ronaldo at this point.

That personnally really fricked me off...theres no doubt messi is/was the best player in the world, but for that calendar year i think others deserved it, its basically a for-gone conclusion regardless of what happens in the year

One thing Ronaldo has going for him is Messi has won the last two. This is probably the closest Cron has been to Messi in awhile and as unfair as it is it seems thats how "MVP" awards go. Voters might just give it to Ronaldo to ratchet up the argument. Plus Ronaldo has had an absolutely stellar season that would win the Balloon d'Or 9 times out of 10. I think if he has a great game today, the finals really doesn't matter and Ronaldo will win it. For the record I would vote for Messi

If Portugal wins and Ronaldo scores a big goal that gets them to the final or to win the final how can he not win it? Real beat Barca for the La Liga title, he scored the goal that clinched it, his league goal and assist stats are barely behind Messi and he would have led his team to a European Championship. It's a no brainer to me. He would still not be considered a better player than Messi but would have unquestionably had a better year imo.
