International torunements aren't aen into consideration imo Case in point 2010 You ave people like Robben Sneijder Xavi and Iniesta...all had great season, all 4 in the WC final, Sneijder did the treble domestically, robben the double and a CL final, Iniesta wins title and the WC scoring the goal in ET. Messi wins That personnally really fricked me off...theres no doubt messi is/was the best player in the world, but for that calendar year i think others deserved it, its basically a for-gone conclusion regardless of what happens in the year
Cannavaro won both the FIFA WPOY and Ballon D'Or in 2006 with an above-average club season and a great WC run. Both trophies also went to a WC winner in 1998 and 2002.
It was shocking that Wesley Sneijder didn't even finish in the top 3 in 2010. Winning a club treble and runner up in the WC wasn't enough?

Because he didn't deserve it?

Ronaldo and Messi are on such a different level than anyone else but who else would you have put third that year? Sneijder was balling outta control.

Here was the vote from that year:
1. Messi
2. Iniesta
3. Xavi
4. Sniejder
5. Forlan
6. Ronaldo
7. Casillas
8. Villa
...
So, three players from Barcelona were selected over Sneijder even though Inter beat Barca in the CL semis that year. He was selected as the CL's top midfielder and the Silver Ball winner at the WC, beating out Xavi and Iniesta in both cases.

I don't watch Serie A too often but several journalists whom I really respect actually voted for Sneijder that year.
I think if Portugal win the Euro after Real Madrid won La Liga Ronaldo will probably win the BdO this year. Messi's 70+ goals are pretty hard to overlook though.

Sneijder played better at this Euros than he did at the World Cup.
Inter didn't beat Barça because of him either. I know he was great that year, but I've been pretty consistent in my belief that he's one of the more overrated players in recent years.

One thing Ronaldo has going for him is Messi has won the last two.
Messi has won the last 3.

He's a lot like van der vaart IMO. He's a great player when the team is built around him.

I feel that way about Iniesta. A role player on two great teams scores some clutch goals and suddenly he's Zidane. If Arteta started for Barca and Spain in Iniesta's place, would anyone notice the difference?

Yes. You need to watch more Barcelona matches. Iniesta is a magician.

Iniesta is one of those weird players who can beat six players with two touches and a half turn
Posted on 6/27/12 at 12:06 pm to NOTORlOUSD
Arteta could admirably fill Xavi or Xabi Alonso's roles, but Iniesta is a much different player.

I've seen plenty of Barca and Spain matches. To me, Iniesta looks like a moon orbiting planet Xavi.

Couldn't remember if it was 2 or 3 and I was too lazy to check, but yes last 3

Then you need to watch more closely. Xavi is the best in the world at what he does, and may be more influential on a match, but Iniesta is a better player (and it isn't that close IMO).

Maybe he is overrated but he was fantastic in 2010. And he's not even close to being as overrated as somebody ahead of him on that list.

Definitely not close.

Xavi is miles better than Sneijder, but there's no point in arguing over Xavi's main value which is hard to quantify. (but if you want to look at quantifiable stats over the past 3 years, Xavi's got him beat too).
