The only way we would have seen Green would have been by beating Portugal and having a game to spare against Germany.

Green's young so he's going to get better at a quicker rate a would imagine which is why Sterling is at a higher level right now.

But if Green were to get a full year of top flight play in any big European league I would imagine we would see vast improvement in his game if all the hype surrounding him is true.

I'm with you. Zusi is good at possession and good at set pieces but he can't push the ball up the field with speed.

And considering that Bedoya looks gassed after the group phase, maybe it is time to start someone in his place and bring Bedoya off the bench?

Could be that we play Yedlin in his stead (like against Germany), but he is the guy we've been using to spell Johnson (who also gets gassed from all the running he does every game). And of course, I got laughed at when I suggested that Besler could spell Johnson instead (because lord knows a center back can NEVER play outside back), so that only leaves one option back there - Chandler (and everybody hates him worse than they hate Brad Davis).

It should be interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing some speed and attacking ability on the wing, whether it is Yedlin or Green.

One thing is clear to me though....not a single one of the people on this board knows what Klinsmann will do. They have not accurately predicted his moves yet.

To be fair I'm pretty confident in saying no one on this board has won a World Cup

've never looked at it as an either/or. I've always seen it as an A+B equation.

When that equation isn't available, I'll go with playing the more talented player. Dude is 19 years old, apparently gifted as hell, and was (most likely) promised a World Cup spot if he chose us over Germany. I'll trust Jurgen Klinsmann's judgement at assessing a young player's potential for the future (and possibly present) over a few disgruntled soccer board posters who are still butthurt that Donovan didn't make the squad. Sure, some of the roster selections were a bit odd, but get over it, it's worked out so far.

We survived the toughest group at the World Cup after losing our best striker and focal point of our attack after 20 minutes of the first game, broken noses, a couple of flukey bad touches that ended up in goals for the opposition, and our 2 best players playing out of position (Deuce/Bradley). Not to mention the fact that every team we've played so far, and most likely will play if we move on, have better players than we do. Jurgen has pushed all the right buttons so far, given the hand he was dealt.

Sorry that wasn't directed at you. I'm still bristling from the ridicule I took yesterday from suggesting that Besler could sub in at outside back (my thinking was that Cameron and Gonzalez might start to get height in the game at center back to match Belgium's strikers, plus Yedlin might start at wing to get some speed in the game -- that leaves few options to spell Johnson with the best being Besler or Chandler).

If anyone would have suggested stating Brad Davis against the Germans, then they would have chastised.

Yep. Same with Yedlin becoming a regular sub in this WC. He was a "wasted spot" to people on this board until he wasn't. Oh, and I recall reading one user's comment (well before the Germany game) that Omar Gonzalez was "Klinsmann's least favorite player on the team."

The fact that Davis didn't really pan out is irrelevant. I think Klinsmann has shown that he brought the particular players he did to play them.

I would love to see Yedlin get a start at right mid. He's really impressed me in the limited playing time he's had so far. He seems to be pretty fearless and up for it when he's come on. We are seriously lacking any kind of dynamic, speedy play from our wide guys. That's not a good thing considering that pretty much every team we play will have more possession of the ball, forcing us to rely on quick counter attacks to create anything. Despite the flattering scoreline against Germany, we were really exposed from an attacking standpoint. Fab at RB and Yedlin at RM would scare the hell out of opposing teams defenses.

Green is listed as a midfielder.

He certainly played a large role in Portugal's 95' minute goal. Da frick is he doing higher up the pitch than Wondolowski?

My guess is that he made a run to spread the defense out and give Bradley an option down field. When Bradley turned it over, there's no way he was getting back in time.

Dude I get what you're saying but you tried to compare him and propose him as a replacement for Jozy.

This isn't FIFA

Agree, but a lot depends on Altidore. If we get him back, we will almost certainly return to the 4-4-2 diamond, which means the outside mids will play more centrally, leaving the outside backs to push up like wingers during the attack.

In that case, I think you want Yedlin subbing in for Johnson or Beasley at outside back, and you want more possession oriented guys like Zusi and Bedoya playing outside mid.

But if we don't have Altidore, I agree that we will need to generate an attack on the wing because Belgium lacks speed on the outside of their defense. That might be their only weakness on defense, that I can see.

b/c Omar is not cut out for elite international play probably

The people saying he's the MOTM vs Germany probably don't understand tactically how bad he was vs Germany or when he came on vs Portugal.

And yet he started against Germany so go figure. This fact poses a serious problem to your position which you seem very willing to ignore.

But ok, I get it. You are an expert. Klinsmann is an idiot and so am I. Tell us all about how much Gonzalez sucks and he is not fit to play on this team.

It would, but it still doesn't address the glaring weakness on the left side. And it's not just that we are below mediocre on that side from an attack standpoint, but we are in fact down right putrid -- outside of a few good runs by Beasley.

Maybe Jones can change that in a diamond formation.

Yes, the Sterling from a year ago doesn't crack the starting line up for England. He has come on so much this past season after hitting a wall towards the end of last season... He's also much stronger and that has seemed to help him a lot this season...

I think Green's played the role everyones expected so far, these aren't friendlies... Jurgen isn't going to just throw him out there.. I really wouldn't expect to see him..

B/c we don't have any depth at CB. Omar is a big guy who if anything could match the German's physical style of play.

All you have to do is watch him play. He is out of position a lot and is bad with the ball at his feet when some closes in on his space.

So he would play with the US internationally...
Not sure about the confusion over this.

If Green can be the player he is projected to be, this move will pay off 10 times over.

You never use all 23 players at a world cup. And LD should not be mentioned on this thread as he would have been left off whether or not this Green situation existed.
