A lot of Americans will likely always be soccer contrarians simply because it is foreign and the following in the US is much more slanted toward an urban, college educated and liberal demographic than other mainstream sports.

They're antagonistic to almost everything they associate with being European except french fries (most of the time).

There's a million things to nitpick about every sport but the root with soccer in the US is likely much more about what's subconsciously motivating the desire to dislike and nitpick.

Fortunately, anyone who doesn't want to watch soccer can always switch over to Matlock.

This is the one really real accurate statement. IMHO, there is so much blatantly elitist “futbol snobbery” amongst the self-styled sophisticates, it turns my stomach. It is my notion that especially European futbollers would self-destruct if Americans ever embrace “their” sport. Hordes of American soccer/futbol fans would be one of their two worst nightmares. The other would be Team USA winning the WC.

I like tournament chess as well, and it uses a point system like soccer (1 for a win and .5 for a draw), and just like in soccer a draw could be a great and exciting matchup between two top teams or a scrappy underdog playing their best game against a big dog. I get why ties in football with such limited games can’t happen regularly, but the immediate reaction of a lot of Americans to hate ties always is weird.
