Why Is There A "Fullback" In Soccer?

I thought the term Fullback originated in football regarding a players position behind the line of scrimmage. Did soccer appropriate this term and why.

maybe because they are the least advanced player (besides the keeper) up the field, and are thus fully back.

I never fully understood where the term came from. Growing up we always played rb, lb, and a sweeper. Then as I got older fullback and center halfback were terms used.

The term Fullback was first used in soccer in the 1880's to describe the two defenders who played back in the 2-3-5 formation. For this reason I think the term predates any usage by American football.

What's stranger is that in American football, the fullback isn't the one who's fully back.
