Who is the best player in the world not playing in the World Cup?

I read a list on ESPN of the top 50 players in the world, and the only one I noticed that was on the list that didnt make the 23 man roster for the world cup was a guy from France named Karim Benzema. I wonder what the deal is with his coach? I guess he decided to keep the older Henry instead of this 22 year old up and comer.

I still have no idea why Benzema wouldn't play, unless he's hurt. Did the idiot only take two forwards?

He consults horoscopes and is the most hated man in France.

Ronaldinho is probably the most high profile player. Some other Brazilians who weren't taken include Alexandre Pato of AC Milan (20-year old who has been playing for Milan for 3 years). Alex, who starts at Chelsea, and Adriano were also not chosen. However, Brazil has lots of talent, Dunga is a rigid coach, and I think he hates Ronaldinho's party-filled lifestyle.
Argentina didn't go with Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti, who were both starters for Inter Milan, the best team in the world this year, or Lucho Gonzalez who is a great midfielder. That is because Maradona is a crackhead.
Then Ballack is missing the tournament because of a last minute injury, which sucks for him, but it couldn't have happened to a bigger prick. Essien also picked up an even more recent injury.
As for Benzema, he did have a shitty year for Madrid this year, along with a poor Euro 2008. Still, he should be picked ahead of the other three strikers not named Anelka or Henry.

And certainly before Jimmy Briand.

1. Jonathan dos Santos
Dzeko (Bosnia)
Cech (Czech)
Riquelme (Arhentina)
Ibrahimovic (Sweden; not a strong case that he's currently "elite" however)

How could I have forgotten this legend?

I wouldn't start Ibrahimovic for the United States, in all honesty. I think he'd be a cancer to have on your team. Anyone who claims to be the best player in the world while accomplishing little more than adding the final goal in blowouts can't be a good ego to have on the roster.

What about a guy who played for Italy in 2006 named Luca Toni? What ever happened to that guy, wasnt he supposed to be one of Italy's best players in '06?

Robbie Keane- Ireland
Darijo Srna- Croatia
And a bit older, but
Andriy Shevchenko- Ukraine

he did well for Bayern and Italy for a brief few years. He seems to have dropped off, though, showing little influence for Roma or any internationals he's appeared in.

He is now 33 and didn't do much for either Bayern Munich or Roma. Definitely not a great player right now, but one down year isn't enough to say he's completely done.
Btw, I just checked the Italian national team and there are literally 11 guys with meaningful caps. Wow.

Is the Chicago Cub crying because he wasn't asked to play for the US?
