But was Europe considered to be as superior then as it is now?
I would say not. Plus European and South American teams would play against each other on a regular basis in Pele's era. This rarely happens today, relatively speaking.

Not since Maradona
He's great, but he's overrated. He's nowhere near the discussion for greatest player ever if not for 2 goals against England in the 1986 world cup. One which was incredible, and one which he scored with his hand.
Don't get me wrong, Maradona was a phenomenal player. I just don't believe he was at Pele's level.

No doubt. I'd put Zidane and Cruyf above him.

I tend to agree with you, especially in regards to Zidane. I would likely put Messi ahead of him as well.

Now:
Maradona
Pele
Messi
Cruyff
Zidane
We're possibly only months away from:
Maradona
Messi
Pele
Cruyff
Zidane
Eventually it will be:
Messi
Maradona
Pele
Cruyff
Zidane
Damn, I look like a Messitard. I'm not, I just respect the hell out of him, and his style of play.
Messi's won 2 or 3 CLs? 3.
Maradona is just as much a douche as Pele IMO, but still, Maradona>Pele. Maradona has carried a national side on his back, Pele simply has been one of the featured players in one (Garrincha>Pele IMO, hehe).

Pele didn't play against catenaccio, it's like comparing pistol Pete to Lebrun.
Mara is significantly better.

Pele might not have played in Europe, but his Santos teams played many games over the years against top notch European competition. It is almost cute how folks want to compare Maradona to Pele. If you have ever watched LOTS of tapes of the 2 then you would know there is absolutely no comparison. Maradona simply benefits from playing more recently and so Pele's greatness is not as fresh on people's minds. The interesting thing is that you can compare tapes to see Pele is superior or you could compare stats. Take your pick.

A criticism also relevant to "Messi's Barcelona"

Possibly, but if we got that route, then we've got to drag DiStefano and Beckenbauer into the conversation.
Week in, week out, for years, Maradona saw tougher D than did Pele.

Is any player better as one man team than Eusebio?
Don't know.

And Maradona's success is a fraction of Pele's.

BTW, this argument is fruitless because it is impossible to prove either way. I believe Pele is the greatest soccer player ever and I furthermore believe that Maradona is not even #2. You obviously believe differently.

Pele is overrated. He played against wayyy subpar competition. I rank Eusebio, Maradona, Messi, and Zidane above him. Pele may have been the best, but I can't put him above those guys because of the competition level. Keep in mind the definition of overrated please.

I agree. Maradona and Pele are almost equal in my mind, only because Maradona played against better club competition.
