What Soccer Star Comes Close to Pele's Greatness?

I'm no soccer aficionado but Pele has been considered the greatest soccer player ever by many.
Who, in today's game even approaches his greatness?
Possibly even surpasses?

Messi seems like the obvious answer, but the landscape of the international game has failed to allow him the success with Argentina that Pele had with Brazil.
Cristiano Ronaldo could be that good, but he will never be able to reach international greatness with Portugal.
Assuming we are ignoring the obvious Maradona, and limiting to active players, that's a really good question.

I would have to go with Messi. The way his national team, Argentina, uses him does not seem to best suit and it may be why he seems to "choke" on the international stage.
I didn't watch much of Maradona but have heard that he was great.

He's got to if he wants to be considered anything close to a top player in the world IMO.. but they've made it sound like he is going to stay there.
Which I don't blame him.. Why ruin a good thing. You're the greatest player in your country, probably pretty damn wealthy, living nearish to friends/family probably, comfortable..

IIRC, Santos wanted him to stick around for the Club World Championship earlier this year. They will cash in. Such is the nature of the Brazilian game.

It isn't so much hate for Argentina, although I am sure there is little love lost there. It is that both Robinho and Neymar not only play(ed) for Santos but came up through their farm system since they were kids much like Pele himself. So it is more out of club loyalty and knowing those players personally. On that note, tough, Pele is an attention whore. However, as much as he may insert foot in mouth after his playing days, none of that changes his greatness on the pitch. He is solidly still the greatest of all time.
To answer the original poster's question, the only active player who can join the conversation IMO is Messi who is without a doubt the best player in the world today. But he is still young and only time will tell how his game holds up over the years and if he can have international success.

He's great, but he's overrated. He's nowhere near the discussion for greatest player ever if not for 2 goals against England in the 1986 world cup. One which was incredible, and one which he scored with his hand.

Likely right after the World Cup in 2014. There is a chance he leaves earlier but I seriously doubt it, especially with Santos making another run at the Libertadores this year. They are playing a critical game today needing to win to advance.
