Can you tell me the winning lottery numbers tomorrow?

Ronaldo has been the second best PK taker in major leagues the past two. 23/25 is pretty fricking good when the professional average is around 79%.

Ronaldo should have taken the first PK so Portugal could have lost a minute later than they did!

You never make 100 percent of the penalties you take. Or something like that.

I was debating this with a friend today. Today, especially after Xabi missed his first, I feel the captain should have stepped in and set the stage. Golden opportunity for Ronaldo wasted. My personal preference would be to have your best player take his shot first or 3rd.

Sheesh, one miss in a CL semifinal will ruin your reputation.

I think the only thing that matters is too have your three best pk takers go first through third. These are the only slots where are you guaranteed to take a shot.

I honestly don't really believe that so many people truly analyze an exercise that comes under so much fire

I thought that Pepe hit a great penalty and Alves hit the bar. They obviously took a penalty for a reason

Well, if Ronaldo had taken it first, Alves still would have eventually and Portugal probably would have lost, though admit I can't read alternate realities well. I think the whole thing has been overblown. Spain had their best take the last PK and no one cared. Blame the guys who missed it, not CR7.

Yes, the manager/coach submits a list in order prior to the start.

Agree that it is a bit overblown.

I'd also add that the difference between Alves' kick bouncing in and Cesc's bouncing out was probably less than 6 inches combined.
It's hard to focus so much on strategy when that was the difference between Spain winning and CR7 taking his for the victory.

Yea, this really isn't possible to predict.

You want your captain, your leader to step up and set an example for the rest of the team by taking one of the first 3 PKs. Everyone has talked about the effect Pirlo's PK had on Italy, and Ronaldo had the opportunity to do something similar. Step up, drill the PK and show your team how simple it is. With that said, Xabi is Spain's designated PK taker and he stepped up and took his first. It is pretty easy to see how your odds improve when your best PK taker takes one of the first 3.

And just a side note, Cesc told reporters after the game that del Bosque wanted him to go second but he refused and opted for the 5 spot because of a "premonition." Ronaldo told reporters he also chose to go 5th.

This is the correct answer. Your best shooters go first to guarantee they get to shoot. I mean, we're talking having Bruno freaking Alves take a PK...or Ronaldo. This should be a no brainer here, and they flubbed it.

Whoever made the decision, lining Ronaldo up fifth was truly poor strategy.

So anything we lambast Ronaldo for we must also put the same towards Cesc.

not the FIFA rule anymore. Unless the rules of the specific competition/league stipulate otherwise, it is not necessary to designate the order of kickers or even the actual kickers. Not sure if UEFA has a set rule beyond FIFA for this competition. Under FIFA laws, requirements are: only players on field at end of time can take kick; if one team is short-handed, other team has to reduce to equal number of participants; and all eligible players must take kick before any player can take a second kick.

I can't disagree with Ronaldo going 5th. You can't predict scenarios in PKs & if Fabregas misses his PK, then all of the pressure goes to the last shooter. So in that case, you want it to be Ronaldo. It was just unlucky that it didn't get down to that point. Bento said his lineup was Moutinho, Pepe, Nani, Alves, and Ronaldo, so I'm not sure if you can just change that on the spot.

As far as strategy goes, there really is no way to see if your strongest kicker should go 1st,3rd, or 5th. It's purely luck. In the CL final, Chelsea went with Drogba at 5th and it worked out for them. Just didn't work for Portugal this time.

I would guarantee that he is taking a shot. That's the strategy. Don't leave your best player watching. Have him shoot and set the tone. My view is that you want to win it before you even get to your 5th kicker so put your best guys first.
