What is the SB opinion on intentional handball punishment? (re: Suarez 2010 WC)

Some friends were discussing how much they hate Suarez after the Uruguay game today and we got into a long discussion about the handball in the 2010 WC. Most of us agreed that it was just a smart play on his part and that Ghana can only blame themselves for not capitalizing on the PK.
One of my friends though was arguing that there should be a bigger punishment for that and Uruguay was rewarded for Suarez breaking the rules. I said that while they were rewarded against Ghana, they lost to the Netherlands in the next game without on of their better players, so they ultimately paid for it.
That being said, what is y'alls opinion? Should Suarez have gotten more than a one game suspension? Should the goal have counted similar to goaltending in basketball? Or do you think its a good rule and that Ghana should have just made the PK?
I know this is obviously an older topic but just wondering how some of y'all feel about the rule.

I think it's fine. Obviously most handballs aren't so blatant, and a situation like Suarez's is fairly rare, so treating them like a goaltending in basketball would be difficult.

I'm good with it.
Ghana's terrible penalties was one of the funniest moments of that World Cup.
My favorite one was the guy that stood over the ball and softly kicked it right at the keeper without getting a running start.

Yea... Uruguay was not rewarded for that. Suarez was sent off. And Ghana had a penalty kick opportunity.
If he would have made it, your friend would not be saying that. But the dude botched the penalty kick and missed it.
They were in no way rewarded for that. I mean what else can they do? Does he just want them to give them a goal?

My opinion is that Gyan should've made the damn penalty. Uruguay was punished by having to stop a penalty. Its not their fault he missed.

Which is the problem.
I wouldn't be opposed to review for those types of plays though and giving a multiple game suspension. I obviously have no problem with Suarez doing it because he used the rules to his advantage, but I could see why some people think blatantly breaking the most fundamental rule of the sport is worthy of a bigger punishment.

I don't even think he was really arguing in favor of that. I think he was just butthurt about Suarez

Smartest play ever. It made me like Suarez.

quote:I disagree now and 4 years ago with people who say this. They were not rewarded; they were punished. The player was sent off, and Ghana were "awarded" a PK. The appropriate punishment was applied. If it hadn't been such a unique circumstance (i.e., the last kick of the match), the punishment would've had much greater effect (Uruguay without Luis for the rest of the match). Also, as you've mentioned, the red kept him out of the next match.
Uruguay was rewarded for Suarez breaking the rules.
Given the circumstance, I think he did the smart - the only - thing he could do if he wanted his team to advance. He didn't "cheat" (as some would have you believe) anymore than someone who makes a rash tackle in the box: Both are against the rules, both prevent goals, both are punished with red and a PK. Appropriately so.

I'm not a huge fan of the unintentional handball, especially when it's from a Pointblank shot and in the penalty box and the defenders hands are by his side. It just sucks to give a PK for that. What are you supposed to do, run with your hands behind your back all the time?

I'm 100% fine with the penalty. Suarez was sent off and Ghana had a PK.

I'm fine with the punishment but I'd also be fine with just awarding the goal in such a blatant case.
