Don't know if I would consider a Gold Cup (North America Championship ) a major tournament . I mean, it's USA, Mex, and Costa Rica...maybe TnT. But that's it.

I mean, I hate it, but the Mexican national team's World Cup history since the 1990s (qualifying streak and getting out of the group stage streak) is one of the best in the world.

On the other hand, a team that gave up a touchdown in a knockdown match of its most recent major tournament isn't deserving of this discussion.

Mexico would be the first to come to mind . . .

there's also Yugoslavia to consider. . .

A twist to the question would be the best footballing nations to never win a major tournament on foreign soil . . .

Historically, probably Hungary. They were among the best in the world for a long time.

Gotta be Belgium. They are armed to the teeth with talent. Their defense had a few cracks in the armor when during the euros, but should have been scoring more none the less. I'm baffled at how poorly they played as a unit.

If you knew anything at all about Belgium, then you wouldn't be surprised.

In this discussion, they're not even close. It's Hungary and Yugoslavia/Croatia.

I think it has to be included, unless you qualify it by saying that no CONCACAF team is under consideration as a great footballing nation...

People aren't really considering the Confederations Cup to be a major tournament, are they?

Ukraine, because all Soviet titles have been transferred to Russia, yet Soviet teams always had a significant Ukrainian presence
