What are chances U.S. doesn't qualify for World Cup?

With qualifying starting tomorrow, I am curious if anybody thinks we won't get through to Brazil 2014. What do you think would have to happen for us to not qualify?

Well the hex is probably going to be brutal:
USA
Mexico
Honduras
Costa Rica
Panama
Jamaica
We should qualify, but it's not a given. It never is. The away matches will all be difficult.

it'll be next round that we would slip up and i'd say about a 22% chance. injuries are a funny thing and could squash the team quick if the right players got hurt. bags of piss will be thrown and not many goals will be scored, i just hope we can get results away from home.

I wouldnt be shocked. No disrespect to the board here, but we dont look the part right now - not even close.

Maybe I should pose the question as 1. What are the odds that we don't get out of this first group; then 2. What are the odds we don't get out of the hexagonal; then 3. If we don't make it out of the hexagonal, who would you think would qualify in our place?
We only need to be top 4 to at least get into a playoff right? And isn't our playoff with like the Oceania winner or something? That can't be the worst thing in the world.

It's early. Who in the concacaf outside of Mexico does?
We have to finish in top 3 for an automatic, or in 4th for a playoff against a CONMEBOL team (frick that).

1. 1%
2. 20-25%
3. ehh costa rica and mexico would be my guess.
im not sure what the playoff is, i just know 2/3 teams auto qualify (cant remember) and i dont want to frick around with any sort of play in games

We'll make it out of the group. Of that you be assured.
As for the hex of US doesn't make it, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama could easily take the top 3. Honduras will be quality as well.

No, we are matched up with Oceania's top team. Asia and CONMEBOL are matched up. That is very good for us.

I did not realize that. That is huge for us and for CONCACAF.

1)0.05%
2)20%
I have a hard time believing we won't be top 4.

I know nothing is guaranteed with the USMNT, but I really feel like a home and away with New Zealand basically cements a World Cup spot with a top 4 finish.

1. Small enough that I'm not worried about it.
2. 10% we don't finish top 3. About 3 percent we don't qualify.

1. I think there is a 0 percent chance we don't get out of the first group.
2. I would say 15%. This team has the talent and I would like to see Jurgy's plan start firing on all cylinders. Like others here I'm very worried about injuries because we have no depth.

0%, barring the actual death of Donovan, Dempsey and/or Howard.
The boys will perform when the lights come on. We'll drop points here and there, but will finish 4th (or better) in the hex.

Not trying to troll at all. I love National Team Soccer and have been making a big effort to learn more about it.

Aren't you the one who has normally brought up the possibility of not qualifying?

This. The round-robin nature of the second group benefits the deeper teams. We can afford a bad result or two, especially on the road, and still advance.

Last three friendlies:
- Offensive explosion
- Grow up fast game
- Sucked into tired and lazy play
This team looks better than our last few teams in my opinion...we get the game experience to go with our physical advantage, and we'll be back in easily. 0.01% chance that we don't qualify for 2014.

Honestly, 10% even seems a little high to me when I think about it. The fact is that we're flat better than all these teams except Mexico. Also, if we don't get out to a great start, we'll probably just be more likely to start our top players and give new guys less of a chance while we try and catch up. I just find it hard to envision teams like Honduras beating us over 10 games.
