Exactly. It also implies you will follow them only when they win. There are plenty of fans who are like that, but I wouldn't categorize fans on this board as bandwagon, even if they support teams that are recently successful.

Well said. I wasn't a full-time supporter when they still had Xabi, but I got to experience him a little bit. As far as Torres and Mascherano go, I became a true fan while they were still at the club and then watched them bitch their way out of the club. It wasn't fun.

Could never bring myself to like Liverpool when I started watching the First Division in 1988.
Had soft spots for Saints (Matthew LeTissier), the Arse (loved Highbury) . From Goals Galore video, and what little we got on ESPN or HSE/PrimeSports.
Then the Americans started going....John Harkes at Wednesday, Kasey at Millwall then Spurs, Jurgen Sommer. It all changed when Brian McBride went to Fulham, and I've been a supporter, but with the great escape I've been hooked ever since.

A bandwagon fan is someone whose loyalty to support a team is based upon the success of that team. The origin and/or longevity of support do not play a role in defining this term at all. It's amazing to me the number of posters on this board that have absolutely no idea what the term "bandwagon fan" means. I've seen this topic discussed routinely here and every single time, ignorance abounds. Becoming a fan of a team because they are winning when you start following the sport may make you fickle, but it does not make you a bandwagon fan...only supporting the team when they are winning, however, does. Choosing to support a team located on another continent has nothing to do with whether you will support them through their successes and failures.

I really have always wondered how someone in the states could follow an English team back then. Did they broadcast any matches live? Any highlights at all? Obviously the Internet wasn't commercialized yet..were there scores in the newspapers? I'm so curious.

i saw my first televised leeds match when they played man united i think in 1997. espn2 when it first came out used to show the odd epl/champions league match. i think the popularity of the 94 and 98 world cups helped bring more games to television. also used to have some matches on wide world of sports on abc back in the day. i remember seeing an fa cup match when i was a kid thinking 'what the frick is this shite?'
wasn't until FSC(or fox sports world back then) became popular in the early 2000s that more and more games from around the world became available. now there are other networks that are available.

According to dictionary.com, the term "bandwagon" refers to a party, cause, movement, etc., that by its mass appeal or strength readily attracts many followers. Having local ties or not has nothing to do with it.

Some would have you believe that you are a bandwagon fan unless you support your local club.
Your fandom is determined by whichever club's grounds you were lucky/unlucky enough to have your parents buy a house next to.
