I watch most leagues. I root for a team in each league (mls, serie a, La liga, epl, Bundesliga) with various levels of fandom for each. I would say check out the different leagues as they all provide something different. Usually you will eventually gravitate to a club.

no. I've supported United since they signed Cristiano years ago, and he was my inspiration for playing and loving soccer as a little kid.
In the past few years though I've fallen in love with Arsenal. I still support the Red Devils, but they're my #2 after Arsenal

If I was you I would follow the EPL in general, then decide on which team(s) you like best. It'll take some time, but, and this will probably sound gay, follow your heart.
For Italy and pick one of the more historic clubs (Milan, Inter, Juve) to follow, thats what I did.
A lot of people here are Dortmund fans because of Pulisic but I don't really follow Bundesliga much except for when I occasionally watch Bayern. They'd be my favorite from Germany
Save your time and don't watch Ligue 1 (France) although it has gotten more competitive this year with PSG not running away with it.

and remember: only losers support Sp*rs

I support teams in MLS, EPL, and Bundesliga.

Don't really care about the other leagues.

What is the board's thoughts on picking teams to follow?
I basically decided to start following soccer around March 2009 and the Sounders were the expansion team and had good crowds and I got some distant family in Washington so I latched onto them. With the Premier League, I just watched a lot of matches and a team came to me, so I started pulling for Tottenham and now I'm miserable all the time.

You could. I've never taken the time to watch anything other than PL and MLS too closely, so I'm a bad soccer fan, I guess.

Nah, they look like a side who will flirt with EPL and top half of Championship the next decade.

I'll tell you what I tell everyone who starts one of these threads:

Just watch a bunch of games and a team will stand out to you. If it's a relegation candidate, terrific. Perhaps you can join Brother S/Brother Brave in tGOATpionship. If it's a title contender, that's also cool.

I started watching soccer a lot around 2 or 3 years ago and told myself I liked Everton. Then after watching a ton of epl I found I do like them and also Man United and Liverpool and Tottenham. Lol

I like them all because they are fun to watch

I most enjoy watching Real Madrid play because I like their attacking style of play.

Just watch a lot of soccer and you will start to find teams you like

100% of teams I'm a fan of are because I had a vested relationship with where I lived and where my life was at the time.
25% of the teams I root for fall into that 100%. The other 75% I've based off of my opinion of that team, maybe their history, and a lot of watching games.

I can root for Arsenal because they usually trash crap teams. I have a hard time committing myself to being a fan because of a coworker, and I find their possession offense, shite defense unwatchable if I really really want them to win.
I can root for Spurs because when they play well, they play well. But I couldn't be a fan because of how many times they snatch a draw from a game they're winning by two.
Man City would be easy to root for if I wanted to pick a pre-season winner. Hard to be a fan of when you realize that unless a prince from UAE buys the team and pours money into it, you wouldn't be a fan of it.

You can summarize 50% of the EPL and 70-90% of every other league as "They're a team from the local area, and will not possibly be in their top league sometime before the decade is out."

It's easiest to stick with the EPL because there isn't the language barrier, though, if they aren't in CL or EL, it will be hard to find many other supporters to cheer with.

Honestly, I usually put whatever NBCSN game is on and do chores around the house while enjoying an early morning drink.

You might want to do some research on why this is a bad idea.

Jesus this is spot on.

Be a City supporter if you like entering every season as the odds on favorite only to crash and burn.

I started watching the EPL last year (1st year watching soccer with no previous history) and decided I would watch all season before picking a team to truly follow. Mid way through the season, I learned about the Champions League (awesome) and expanded into Europe. I love watching the big boys, their quality of play is amazing. Still haven't pick "my team" but I am slowly seeing myself gravitate to certain clubs.
Download the Fotmob app, it's a great app for following soccer. Even gives you tv channels & times for games.

Want to start following soccer - Need help picking teams.
I'm in the same boat. Just started watching about 3 weeks ago. My girls are 8 and have played for about 4 years but they're starting to get pretty good and I want to be able to help them with the game and answer questions. I never played soccer growing up. I figured the best way was to start watching European soccer. I've watched about 10 EPL games and 1 Bundglisa. I had seen this type of post before and everyone suggests to let the team "come to you" so that's what I've been doing.

Very early stages of rooting for Swansea because I discovered this past weekend they're from Wales (so are my ancestors). Plus they have the first American coach ever in the EPL. Is there backstory on them that I need to be aware of?

I'm not saying that this isn't a reason to support them, but I will say that you shouldn't use this as your primary reason to.

Before Swansea won this weekend there was talks of him being sacked
