That was a mixture of players playing the correct roles in a formation that made sense and, to me at least the bigger thing, us pressing the shite out of Guatemala as soon as the ball was turned over. Why we didn't do that in the first game is still beyond me

Flat 442 or 4411. Press only in our own half against better teams. Nagbe and Bradley in the center with Nagbe having the freedom to go forward and Bradley providing backline cover plus moving the ball from back 4 to midfield. Dempsey, Jozy, Wood, Morris up top (Dempsey makes it 4411). FabJ and Yedlin at fullback positions, providing overlaps, not sure who the wingers will be but they will tuck inside more going forward.

Play mostly on the counter, let two of our best passers in Bradley and Nagbe start the attacks and push out wide to overlapping fullbacks. Intense pressure towards ballside touchline in our own half. Don't let Timmy Chandler near the squad.

My bench would have Bedoya, Morris/Wood, Yedlin, Orozco, Dempsey, Miazga, and Jones.

Dempsey is starting until we find someone better at putting the ball in the back of the net.

I know he is, but this thread is about our preferences. I think this is a good time to get some younger guys some experience.

I would have Dempsey more involved once qualifying starts back.

I like the 4-3-3 and I think it serves us well when we play teams of lesser quality. We should attack them. However, I am afraid that we would be killed when we play against the better teams and teams with good pace.

Zusi does not fast enough for a wide role in the international game, imo.

Totally agree. He looked very comfortable playing center mid in the last qualifier. Other than his crossing ability I don't think he's a very effective winger.

Could you please explain what you think the slight change in your formation does?

That's the role he plays now for SKC. Left CM above the single CDM in a 4-3-3.

I prefer it over the diamond for defensive shape/organization, but in practice it may not end up being much different than a diamond since in attack with the wingers staying central it's going to play as a diamond

A team can't play a diamond in the attack and go flat defensively?

Essentially you attack and defend in different shapes. Something to think about ...

Sacha Kljestan just had a beautiful assist in the RB Orlando city game.

Pulisic and Wood have to BR starters with how they have been playing.
