The answer is, neither one is better than the other.
Yea, Im out. There is only really one douche in the thread. Which is a shame.

Exactly and that was just as big a win in terms of sporting terms as the miracle on ice but the USA team has to win several games like that.
Also can't stress this enough....WE HAD COME IN SECOND TWO TOURNEYS AGO. I don't care how big a gulf there was between the USA and the ussr, the gaps between them and other teams were minimal, it doesn't matter that the team were amateurs. Our amateur basketball teams did pretty good didn't they? If only 5 countries care it doesn't matter

If Brazil's main competition in soccer was Canada and Sweden, they may have won every single World Cup.

You care too much about this college/professional difference. Spain has like a dozen guys that did not make their roster that would be the best player on the US national team. For example, some of these superstars are even "college age" players like Isco who is only 21 or 22 I believe. Daniel Carvajal also missed the Spanish team at age 22 and he is one of the premier right backs in the world.
The real difference is that the World Cup gauntlet is more grueling. Winning one absurd game is far easier than getting out of the group and then winning four more games in Brazil (where the home nation could be very well be a late round opponent).
I would predict that a US soccer college all-star team is more likely to beat Brazil or any superpower soccer nation in one single home than the USMNT is to win this World Cup.

The only decent team our hockey team played in 1980 before they got to Russia was Sweden and possibly Czechoslovakia.

Well, there wouldnt be a movie without the Gold Medal so there is that.
It would not be an ABC after school special (yeah, I´ve seen the movie)......

Id argue ours is tougher than the Italy/England group or the Netherlands/Spain group. But it doesn't matter they're each historically tough.
Italy/England is first group with 3 WC winners in one group.
Netherlands/Spain is first group with last tourneys finalist.
Our group is the first where all 4 teams made the group stages last tourney.
So there are 3 historically tough groups

They'd be great wins. Not miracles.
You are right in this regard, but if the US won the whole tournament, getting multiple results against top 10 teams, then yes it would be a miracle. While the US does have players I. Professional leagues, the gap in talent is really large. We don't have one player who is even on a decent European team, or could be considered a star anywhere other than the MLS. That is a stark difference to virtually all the other top nations. So let's say we get into the knockout stages, which means we've gotten results against either Germany or Portugal. Then in the knockouts we face Belgium, Argentina, Italy, and Spain on our way to the trophy. If that happened, it would be one of the greatest runs in WC history. All those teams are vastly superior in talent, and though we could compete with each in a one game playoff, beating them in a tournament, one after another, would be so unbelievable that I wouldn't doubt people would refer to the run as a miracle.

According to the average rankings it is. By a half point. It's a pretty tough group.

I think Chile makes this the toughest group, in spite of Australia being in it.
ETA I think Spain and Chile come out, BTW.

I wouldn't argue with that. But like I said, there are three historically tough groups this wc

Hope they're all 8ft tall, 2.2 feet wide, and made of bricks, because they aren't making it competitive otherwise
ETA: I agree with you that the US winning would be insane, but I don't even think that an NASL all-star team anchored by ancient Marcos Senna, ancient World Cup winning Kleberson, and a bunch of names that might have meant something at some point would have a greater chance at winning a one off with someone like Spain, Brazil, etc than the US winning a World Cup.

The point is that one unthinkable miracle is more likely than four huge upsets. Obviously, the college or NASL team would get ravaged like 99.9% of the time.
