Echo Boomer logic. Everything recent is the biggest/greatest.

You have no idea how big Miracle on Ice was...just because you saw the damn movie doesn't make it so. God, how easy it is to forget or not know if you weren't there...alive.

It wouldn't be a freakin' miracle like it was for the USA in 1980 if the US won the World Cup...we have real professionals trying to compete seriously since the 1990's.

There's no soccer team on the planet so much better than everyone else than the Soviets were...and they were so much better than all the other professional teams...let alone...baby-faced college kids.

Shite...next time we send college kids to the World Cup...lets have this discussion gain.

Dude we'd come in first and second within the past 20 years. That's like saying it'd be a huge upset if the Netherlands won the WC. First and second. How are you not getting that? We'd have to have at least 4 results the caliber of that Russia win to win the WC

I think it's easily the World Cup. Sure, Russia was a much better team than we were in 1980, but that is just one game. You can luck up and win one game. We would have to win at least 5 games to win the World Cup. This month we will have to beat at least one of Ghana, Portugal, and Germany. We will then most likely follow that up with having to beat in order Belgium then Argentina. Then we will have to beat either Spain, Holland, Chile, Brazil, Croatia, Uruguay, England, Italy, or the Ivory Coast. Then once we reach the final, we'll have to beat whoever comes out of the other side of the bracket. It will easily be the greatest feat in American sports history.

This just shows me that some of you have no clue. You aew comparing the USA 1980 mens Hockey team gold medal with the Dutch winning the WC?

I saw the damned event. It was political. I don´t care how great the Soviet Union were, it´s not comparable. Not in the least.

The US was one of the lowest ranked teams in the tourney. They were not expected to win a game.

No we get it the Russians were amazing. They had two other close games that tournament but no losses other than to us. That win was amazing, truly historic, worthy of the hype. But it's one game. The USA was as good or better than every other team in the tournament.

The USA would have to win at least 3 games of that level of talent disparity and get a draw.

ETA: again we'd come in second two tournaments before. Two tournaments ago the USA finished like 30 out of 32 in the wc

Nobody is discounting the Miracle on Ice. But you are definitely discounting what it would take for the USMNT to win the WC.

Winning the World Cup to be equivalent to 1980 would be like the USA sending...the University of Portland, Santa Barbara and UCLA kids to go play Brazil and win (if Brazil had won the World Cup the last 4 times and were reigning 20 year champs...and if Brazil had demolished the 2nd best team (Germany) each World Cup 6 to nil.)

That would be the case if the only other people who took the sport seriously were either Scandinavian or Canadian.

Soccer forum. Soccer bias. If you are taking away from the accomplishment because it was just "political" you are a way off. Sure it had political overtones...meh. Whats the point, there is no arguing the bias here.

OK? We're currently in the middle of the pack of WC teams. Only one of the 5 teams we will play to get to the semis will be ranked below us (Ghana).

Maybe not, but for the US to win this World Cup would require 7 games that were close to perfect, with no key injuries and suspensions. In any one game playoff, the US can play with most teams, but gulf in quality between the top 10 teams in the world and the next ten (where the US is) is pretty vast. We don't even have a superstar player to rely on like other teams who are as good as we are. So I would contend it would be a miracle because there are so many teams who better than we are, with more talent.

No way that game is so memorable if not for the Cold War. None.

This is what they don´t understand. Were the US to win the WC, they would have pulled four miracle on ices......

I don't know much about hockey, but this seems like a ridiculous comparison

Soccer forum. Soccer bias.
Dude, I have a fricking hockey player as my avatar. I'm currently watching game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals. There is no soccer bias in my post. They call it the "Miracle On Ice" because of ONE game. Yes, we had to overcome insurmountable odds to win that game, but at the end of the day it is still one game. Our hockey team didn't have to run through the gauntlet our soccer team will have to.
