Exactly. That was a weak WC, we got some lucky breaks and we still only made the quarterfinals. It boggles the mind that people are trying to say winning the two competitions would be equal

I get it, and I'm being a pedant, but I think that it helps your argument. Differences that don't seem to be a big deal, e.g., better professionals vs. not better professionals, are obviously a big fricking deal in soccer. Obviously, that's magnified when we're talking four games, but I could actually see the US doing that, even though it's very far in the distance. I couldn't see a situation in which, even if all other nine players are accounted for, an all-star team of "sub-par" players could begin to deal with a left side of Neymar-Marcelo or Ronaldo-Coentrao.
He should be in ATL again in August. At least worth the ~$10 general admission tickets.

That German team was a team in transition. They didn't do well at the Euros before and after that WC. It really was the Ballack and Kahn show. Also they had a fairly easy run, beating Paraguay, the US and then Korea to reach the final. That's not to take away from our run, but that WC was a massive anomaly.
What that WC did do was raise expectations for US fans, making us think we were closer to the top than we actually were, when in truth that was the weirdest WC maybe ever, and this drawing conclusions from it a bit dangerous.

The talent gap between probably 8-10 World Cup teams and the US team is incredibly massive. To win the whole thing, like many others have said, would take probably 4-6 "miracles," far more than just a one off with one historically great Russian hockey team. Sure, our guys are professionals, but our professionals are not in the same galaxy, talent wise, to the individual players and teams we will face in Brazil.
