US Advancement Scenarios

With the first games for all teams in the books, here are the scenarios for the US:
CR: Win, PAR: Win - Advance, 1st or 2nd depending on COL
CR: Win, PAR: Draw - Advance unless PAR beats COL and COL beats CR, 2nd Place
CR: Draw, PAR: Win - Advance unless CR beats COL and COL beats PAR, 2nd Place
CR: Win, PAR: Loss - Do not advance, because PAR and the CR/COL winner (or COL with a draw) would both have 4+ points
CR: Loss, PAR: Win - Do not advance, because CR and the PAR/COL winner (or COL with a draw) would both have 4+ points
CR: Draw, PAR: Draw - Advance if COL wins out and US wins tiebreakers (could be any of the three)
Scenarios with 1 or 0 points - definitely do not advance

We must beat Costa Rica now and preferably by at least two goals.
If Columbia has six points and we tie Costa Rica, they are safe to win the group and have no reason to play Costa Rica hard. Thus we are at a disadvantage in that final group game.

I don't see why we need to win by 2 goals. Win by 1 and beat Paraguay by 1 and the Colombia Costa Rica game doesn't matter.

I think his point was that we need to come out and attack. I got the impression that you wanted to focus on 1-0 possession wins. Could be wrong, but it's a disastrous tactic unless your as good as Spain.

this is a thread about advancement scenarios. i was simply stating we did not need to win 2-0. it was just a factual statement based on points. i never said we should settle for only trying to win 1-0.

In that instance, you are relying upon us winning BOTH games. Something we don' thave a habit of doing.
Yes, any victory over Costa Rica would be good - but getting our goal difference back (while also putting us ahead of Costa Rica would be huge. Of course, the Paraguay/Columbia match may change thigns for us too. Columbia looked far from unbeatable the other night, making our display even more frustrating.

From what I've read, if we draw Paraguay, the only way we don't advance is if CR beats Colombia by 6.

First tiebreaker is GD, then total goals scored, then head to head.
We are ahead by 6 in GD. If they win by 6 goals, then we would technically be tied in GD. It's pretty much impossible for that to happen, so it's safe to assume a tie would advance us.

yeah they're not winning by 6. no need to even discuss it. a draw and we're through.

The big win was huge - but if we lose against Paraguay its all for nothing.

if we beat paraguay, and CR beats colombia we win the group on GD
