Look disagree if you want. That's fine. All I'm saying is they listed this situation in an EPL press release when the rule was being debated. The FIFA members who put forward the rule change were quoted explaining the spirit behind it. They didn't want play impacted in any way by a player in an offside position. Especially when it involves the defender being forced to decide whether to defend the offside player or not.

Rumors that they took coutinho's jersey off display in the store and are taking down his window stickers.

This isn't a hot take. The defense and set pieces are a joke. It's been that way for years. It's hard to watch if you've been around when the club had players such as Hyypia, Agger, etc and now watching Lovern makes me cringe for 90 min.

I know. I was around for those players as well and this is like water torture compared to that. All I'm saying is that it was the first game of the season. We finished last season rock solid at the back after the system change. Let's wait a few weeks and see if we can get back to that before letting the sky fall in. Once this coutinho situation has been settled we can really figure out our best formation.

Unpopular opinion time!!!

If the £137m rumor is true, I hope we sell. Selling Coutinho at a premium is good business, sets us up for the future, and doesn't really affect our trajectory for the season as much as some might think. That kind of money opens a world of possibility in reestablishing ourselves as a top 4 staple year in year out. Versus a 1 year push for glory, eventually selling Coutinho for less, and going back to 5 or 6 in the table.

Consider the case of Riyad Mahrez. After Leicester's big run they held on to him when they should have sold. Similar scenario with Coutinho. They are very similar players. Instead LCFC sold the wrong guy, and now they are essentially stuck with Mahrez. Sure, they can still sell but not at the premium they should have demanded last summer.

Worst case scenario.... we keep him, we bow out of CL in group stage, scrap to get 4th, and then in the summer end up having to sell for a ton less. I don't want to be fleeced by these assholes next summer getting only around £50-£60m. I think now is the right time to sell. Even without him I think we are a top 4 team who can realistically make round of 8 in CL.

I'm on the fence. We saw how the Suarez situation worked out so much easier said than done that he can be replaced. And Coutinho is pretty damn important as for how we play. Yea, we still have a dangerous attack, but he's the link for our midfield to attack that we were sorely missing yesterday.

Suarez is a different case. No one was offering this kind of stupid money for him. Ever. And then we got fleeced when we sold him out of desperation. Granted, Coutinho isn't going to take a chunk of anyone's neck this season, but there is no way we get this opportunity next off season.

I think we can get a couple more guys in here this season, and it wouldn't necessarily need to be a like for like replacement. I don't think Phil wants to be a 10. He wouldn't be one at Barca.

How much is Coutinho making this year? Would an extra 10m + the promise to sell him next summer be enough to make him shut up and play?

I'm in agreement that the second goal was offside. He offside player clearly makes a move towards the ball which he then quickly changes. There is no way to know how that changes the instant decisions the defenders have to make - which is pretty much the whole point of the rule.

Look at the replay. You can see how it didn't affect how anyone reacted to the play. Lovren didn't even know he made the half step toward the ball, Mignolet wasn't affected, Matip can see who the pass was going to and acts accordingly.

3rd goal was borderline.

Craig Burley disagrees.

It may have been a difficult one for the side official to see, but it was clearly offside.

Another good Goal.com article by Melissa Reddy...

https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/inside-liverpools-fight-to-keep-coutinho-against-hostile/8dtvzq8vhudv1dpvbsynam9ya

quote:

INSIDE LIVERPOOL'S FIGHT TO KEEP COUTINHO AGAINST HOSTILE BARCELONA TRANSFER GAMES

quote:

Timing, quite clearly, is instructive throughout this whole situation.

The theory that Coutinho's hand was forced by FSG's statement is flawed. Their "definitive stance" was long communicated to both him and Barca, and was made public so there could be no confusion or speculation over where they stood.

In Hong Kong, following the rejection of the first bid from the Catalans of £72m, Klopp informed Liverpool’s highest earner he would not be allowed to exit as their planning for the season, already at an intensive stage, involved him as a core element. In Munich, FSG president Mike Gordon made this clear again.

Liverpool’s position has never altered, and so to suggest the statement underpinned Coutinho’s action would be to ignore the full picture.

quote:

Another example of similar tactics from Barcelona is Marco Verratti. However, in that transfer war, Paris Saint-Germain eventually outmanoeuvred them and ended up retaliating by activating Neymar’s €222m (£198m) release clause to set the current state of affairs in motion.

Barca did not believe they could actually lose their Brazilian superstar and, knowing they could not negotiate for Liverpool’s, have pressured Coutinho - through a media offensive, ‘now-or-never’ threats and a swell of voices in his ear - into taking the antagonist route he wanted to avoid.

The player, of course, is not passive in all of this - it is his signature on the letter emailed through, it is his decision.

quote:

The suggestion that Klopp and Coutinho have had have a strained relationship for six months is not only a convenient time frame as it just excludes the latter’s happiness to ink fresh terms without an exit strategy, but also crumbles under the flimsiest investigation.

The manager has, on more than one occasion, told his star performer that he is the main catalyst to Liverpool’s rebirth as a force domestically and in Europe. He has unshackled him from the ‘all-on-my-shoulders’ responsibility that often clouded Coutinho’s decision-making on the pitch, and has geared the team around his creative strengths.

The former Inter man's most productive campaigns have come under the German, who gave him positional freedom as a ‘wing 10’ and recruited two more forwards in Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke this summer to allow him to dictate their offensive game from deeper.

Brazil’s coaching staff, meanwhile, have been in contact with Klopp over Liverpool’s assertive approach, which they wanted to replicate, as well as the 50-year-old’s use of Coutinho and Roberto Firmino to ascertain how to get the best out of both.

quote:

The manufactured unhappiness, in contrast to Coutinho’s own words when he returned to Melwood for pre-season on July 11, is all part of the poker game.

The tactic of making it personal to Klopp is a miscalculated move, though, as it will only galvanise Liverpool’s owners.

Keeping the Rio-born talent is not an issue of pride for the manager - who has previously said what the Reds require is players “pushing the train, not jumping on a running train” - it is about the circumstances for the club.

Having realised that being willing to overpay in this window is no guarantee of recruiting a priority target as was the case with RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, more money to spend with little time is not going to help Liverpool advance this season.

FYI Sakho has been registered in our PL squad.

Could be something. Could be nothing...

It's nothing. If we don't register him it could be grounds for breach of contract and he could walk for free. Pretty sure he was registered last year too.

Lol I figured it was nothing

I'll be honest though, I'm surprised we haven't moved him on yet

I'd disagree

Iniesta isn't getting any younger for Barca and Rakitic has been a little underwhelming for them

PSG has a lot of attacking options, but they could use some upgrading in midfield and they're showing their ambition to win CL.

I'd really find it hard to believe they won't be there next summer. I think Barca is just trying to get in his ear to force a move telling him that it's now or never.

We're a bit light in the midfield at the moment

Agree. We have 4 right now heading into some pretty crucial 2 game a week stretches - 5 if you include Milner, who is terrible in most CM situations. With Lallana out and Cou unsettled, very very thin for all those games. And no one with any creativity.

My final opinion on the Cou situation - no way we can sell him. FSG will be a joke in future transfer situation and we might as well plan on Firmino, Mane, etc. leaving in the next few seasons and there's not much we can do about it. The ONLY way we can be a team who doesn't sell (unless and until its on our terms) is to tell them no, and make it such a pain in the butt that they never want to buy from us again. In the short term that may make things difficult for guy like Cou, but its a world cup year, and he'll be back to playing highly. I do believe Klopp will be happy to get rid of him next year when he has time to make a back-up.

quote:

Look at the replay. You can see how it didn't affect how anyone reacted to the play. Lovren didn't even know he made the half step toward the ball, Mignolet wasn't affected, Matip can see who the pass was going to and acts accordingly.
Unless your replay has little thought bubbles showing you the inner thoughts of each player, you have no idea. Yes, its most likely that it did not change much - but the intent of the rule is to remove that possibility. You don't know for certain what instant reaction the players had to the situation becomes of that player - it may not have changed anything they did or caused them change any physical action at that point, but there is no way for you to know that. And thats the point. You're entitled to your opinion - and so am I. We could both be wrong for all I know.

Finally, my take yesterday is that Hendo was not very good at protecting our back line. I'm not sure Klopp wants someone who is that good at it, at the expense of other things he's looking for in that role. But they ran at us way too much. Scored a goal when no one tracked a runner, and basically had way too much space. I'm not saying we can't win without a different player in that role (see Can in the last 10 or so games last year, but there were other differences in the set up as well), but that I don't believe we'll make make tremendous strides defensively just because we add one better player. Plus it was set plays that killed us yesterday more than anything.

ETA - hendo 0 interceptions, 0 clearances and 2 tackles yesterday.

Some of you guys are freaking the F out.

Team was obviously unsettled with wind out of our sails because of F-ing Coutinho. Playing away, on opening day and nearly pulling it off, looking like shite most of the game isn't that big of a deal.

Defense is concerning, but get a grip if you're surprised by that. We've signed no one and still had Lovren and Moreno out there.

Just have to get the attitude right and a home win should do wonders. Regardless of what happens with Cou, we will challenge for silverware this season. Title? Doubtful but top 4 and a decent run in the Champs League pending draw would suffice.

I expect Man U and City to be far and away the favorites if Cou goes and we don't sign anyone else.

Look at their squads, As shitty as Man U was last year, that won't happen again under Mourinho. They looked terrifying today.

As for Hendo, most jeckyl and hide player ever. One game looks like a 1 man dynamo the next just totally lost and out of place. It's bizarre and I can't put my finger on it.

Still can't decide if Can is good enough. In reality, we needed Keita, Coutinho, VdV and probably a top shelf striker to be considered a true title threat.

This is how we should keep Coutinho:

"Negotiate" a Coutinho transfer, giving Barca every impression that we've "given in" to the inevitable until, with one minute remaining in the window, tell them as much as we wanted it to work out, we just couldn't do it.

Its not us, Barca... its you. Oh, and nice home match against Real today.
