Madrid would be fun and I think we'd have a good shot to advance out of that tie.
Also, some news from UEFA today, all 4 English sides will automatically qualify for the group stage next year and moving forward, 5th/6th automatically qualify for the Europa group stage... I like it

Unless a team outside the top 4 wins the Europa league is the way I understood it. Meaning if arsenal were to win it this year and finish outside top 4, 4th place would still have to win a playoff.

Really good article from The Anfield Wrap.
Liverpool, Van Dijk, Firmino, and Total Football (LINK)
Liverpool, Van Dijk, Firmino, and Total Football (LINK)
quote:
Players like van Dijk and Firmino are the raw materials of Total Football. The athleticism and mobility to exert defensive pressure from the front, both individually and coordinated as a unit, and the enthusiasm and footballing brain to exploit space and ensure numerical advantage wherever we come into possession of the ball. If you can boast players like that right up the spine of your side, or even throughout the side… Well, history has proven that then you’re really onto something.
quote:
If your spine is getting that strong, you’re almost in a position to carry a few journeymen players along for the ride within the structure that results. Which brings me to my original point: if we’re headed for Total Football — genuine, intense, pressure football — then the players we buy from here might not be the types of player you hear mentioned.
Neil said: “The game is completely holistic. Maybe this feeds into the conversation we’re having about centre midfield. If we’re talking about centre halves running games from centre back, and we’re talking about centre forwards winning the ball back more than centre midfielders, no wonder it’s hard to be a centre midfielder, because these lads are doing all your work as well.”
quote:
I think this manager’s reluctance to spend his bosses’ cash hints at a man with perfectionism in mind.
I may wish he’d sometimes spend it a little more freely, but thinking about it, I have to concede that perfectionism might mean the fullest possible expression of the kind of football he wants his sides to play. Van Dijk is evidence of exactly that.

Yeah that's how I took it too, I was just lazy and didn't feel like typing it all out

Transfer Rumors from the Liverpool Echo (LINK):
Via the Daily Mirror:
Oooooh, a Meyer signing would be sweet.
And, to spice up TFTC's life a little, via Gol Digital:
Now here's a whopper via Diario Gol:
Is Piotr Zielinski still a worthy acquisition?
And, enough to make a heart of ice melt like the new Spring, via Brazil's UOL Esporte:
Via the Daily Mirror:
quote:
Max Meyer has rejected a new deal with Schalke.
After seeing his team-mate - and fellow Liverpool target - Leon Goretzka pen terms with Bayern Munich in January, Meyer has also turned down fresh terms at the AufSchalke.

And, to spice up TFTC's life a little, via Gol Digital:
quote:
Arsenal were in the hunt for Stefan de Vrij, but the perennial losers seem to have shifted their attentions elsewhere after it was reported the Dutchman is “more likely” to join Liverpool instead.
Now here's a whopper via Diario Gol:
quote:
Diario Gol believe Liverpool’s powers-that-be actually met with Dani Ceballos in January, and after Zinedine Zidane introduced him for 29 seconds in Real’s 3-1 win over Leganes last weekend, Marca reckon the Spanish midfielder has told president Florentino Perez he wants to leave the Bernabeu.
It’s hinted that, despite Ceballos having a mammoth £440m release clause, Madrid would now be willing to accept bids totalling less than 10% of that value.
Here’s the twist, though.
President Florentino Perez has reportedly cooked up a plan to send Ceballos to Merseyside - but only to improve relations before making a move for Mohamed Salah.
Is Piotr Zielinski still a worthy acquisition?
quote:
Napoli “named their price” for play-maker Piotr Zielinski amidst interest from Liverpool this week
And, enough to make a heart of ice melt like the new Spring, via Brazil's UOL Esporte:
quote:
Roma’s goalkeeper Alisson has been pretty regularly linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the last few weeks.
The ECHO revealed recently that the Reds had been put off by the Brazilian international’s price tag, but that’s not stopped the swathe of rumours.
Brazilian publication UOL Esporte now believe that a move to Anfield is the 25-year-old’s top priority, saying he is ‘keen’ on the possible transfer.

I have to wonder if we’ll use Scouse, Spanish, English, or German to tell them to frick right off

£44mm for a player they bought for £15mm this past summer and have barely played??
Don't do us any favors Flo!
Zielinski is one I'd take though!

Financials from last season are in - doesn't include Europe at all. Pretty nice up-tick in revenue and profit. Obviously those things are very subjective to the timing - but with CL revenue, CL ticket sales/hospitality, etc. all being added in - this should be an even bigger year. Plus CL should have additional revenue from sponsorships, etc.
If nothing else, FSG is turning us into a self sustaining machine. Such a long way from administration looming.

I'll take one Jorghino, one De Vrij, one Allison, and throw in a Lemar or Martins, please.

I was listening to the Anfield wrap yesterday and they made the point that everyone we’ve been heavily linked with since Klopp arrived is now at Anfield, sans Keita who will arrive this summer. VVD, Gini, AOC, Salah.
They felt very confident that Jorghino and Allison would be here. They others mentioned as good possibilities were one or both of Lemar and Pulisic. These guys have their fingers on the pulse of the club and it made sense. When’s there’s a ton of smoke around a guy coming to Liverpool, he ends up at Liverpool.
Pairing one of Lemar/Pulisic as wide/attack minded midfielders with Keita and having Jorginho sit deep and play passes and provide cover would be a dream come true, and I think it’s going to happen.

Its interesting - we could potentially have an entirely different midfield 3 as first choice for next season. I'm not sure what to expect with Can from this point - and Hendo obviously just can't stay healthy anymore.

I expect us to.
Keita- Jorginho- Lemar as the eventual “best lineup”
Lallana- Milner- Gini- Hendo- Ox will all see their fare share of games. Lemar can play on the wing as well. It’s going to be a deep midfield next year if we only replace Can with someone other than Keita. Lots of bodies there. It will be good for competition.
If it were up to me I’d rather see us pursue a top CB to pair with Virgil over a guy like Lemar. There’s nothing to say Lemar is miles better than in form AOC. Getting a guy like Koulibaly from Napoli would net a greater improvement to the side imo. That would arguably be the best CB pairing in Europe, because I think you can count on one hand the ones better than Virgil.

I think the “coutinho replacement” will play exclusively in the front 3 as depth behind our regular guys, meaning I think personally Lemar is out. Keita will be the most attacking midfielder in the midfield 3. I want Leon Bailey personally for the front 3

The boss was trying to tell the reporters why Gini Wijnaldum and Ben Woodburn have missed training this week, but perhaps shared too much information.
“They have diarrhoea!” Klopp told today’s conference, before the press officer interrupted him and made him stop…
“It’s not allowed to say in public?! Jesus… Diarrhoea? How can I learn language when you cannot say it!?
“If you have it… What do you say?” he asked, before being told that ‘The Runs’ would suffice next time!
“The runs… My players have the runs,” he concluded!
