I think Chelsea and Arsenal will drop out of the Too 4 race and the remaining clubs will jockey for 2-3-4. I would not be shocked if United finishes 4th. Spurs will flop their way to 3rd.

Can someone explain to me the Can situation?

WTF does he want to leave for Juve? Do we not want to pay him?

Supposedly he wants to be one of the highest paid players on the team AND he wants a reasonable buy-out clause.

And, also supposedly, Liverpool are willing to give him one or the other, but not both.

Figured it was something like that.

We should pay him. I get being semi stubborn as he hasn't proven himself WC but letting someone that young go, with that amount of potential is not a good look.

We don't want to go back to being the Arsenal of the EPL.

I thought it was either/or that he wanted... he's on 70k/wk now

Plus, It has also been said that he wants to play the #6..

I know he's got a fan club here, but I'm not a member.

We'll miss him even less than we're not missing Phil IMO.

Surrendered a goal yesterday because he got knocked off the ball at his size (on top of the fact that he was dawdling with the ball at his feet right in the center of midfield).

Hell, Bobby and Mo and Gini are smaller guys and they don't get knocked off the ball by bigger players like that.

He picked up the ball in traffic and was fouled... He was excellent yesterday..

On that goal.. I think its funny.. Moreno would have been slaughtered by our supporters for pushing forward on the counter...

I agree in a sense that Can is not irreplaceable and can be inconsistent, but to lose a £35-40mm player for nothing is what hurts most...

So the player who is one more yellow card away from a 2-game league ban got fouled.

I concede your point.

Not uncommon for a player who plays his position at this time of the season... I actually like that he's one of the only players we have the isn't afraid to be a bit of a count on the pitch.. we lack that big time...

Speaking of yellow card bans, it was hilarious watching Suarez trying to get a ban for Barca yesterday, at the end of the match... ref wasn't having it..

Can
He can dwell on the ball too long and isn’t always the most disciplined when it comes to positioning but that’s all correctable with more experience since he’s still so young. He’s definitely got the potential to be world class so it will suck to lose him for nothing, but I can respect him for keeping his mouth shut and playing his heart out for the club

"Still so young".

He's 24.

He'll be 25 in the middle of next season.

He should be pretty much entering his prime, not still in "potential" stage.

I say that because he has a lot of the technical side of his game pretty well ironed out and obviously he has the physical attributes. He’s also been moved all over the pitch and really is finally playing the same position (kind of) regularly over the past few years. He’s gotten a lot better at learning how to play the position and will only continue to get better. Like I said, he has potential to be world class if he continues to develop his positional awareness and reading the game. I get you’re not his biggest fan, but I think you’re being a little harsh

Kind of... I'd love to see him strictly play the #6 role for the next couple of years as he enters his prime...

For us he plays all over the midfield...

For the record, I've been critical of him over the years... but the talent is there and to lose him for free should NOT happen..

Yep. Those are my thoughts. Some of things he struggles with (tracking runners, holding onto the ball too long) are, in part, problems from his not being locked into the 6 for the last 6 years. Playing LB, RB the 8, the 6, CB, etc. I would hate to lose Can. However, if we can replace him with an upgrade, as our number 1 choice has been rumored, I may be ok with it. But my problem is that Hendo is clearly not dependable physically and I'd rather keep Can than Hendo at this point.

The Club has clearly drawn a line about release clauses. We won't rework a club philosophy solely for Can, imo.

Just my opinion, but I believe Can wants a release clause because he ultimately wants to go back to Bayern and Bayern love those release clauses.

Liverpool have now played 20 games with and 20 games without Coutinho this season.

With: W8 D10 L2 1.70 points per game
Without: W15 D2 L3 2.35 ppg.
Total: W23 D12 L5 2.03 ppg.

Doesn't prove a thing, but there's quite a difference for whatever reason.

Interesting. As the guy points out, correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation, but interesting nonetheless.

And I think we've proved over the past summer and January windows that no player is bigger than the club. We have been, since FSG arrived on scene, a club with principles and a plan, and Can isn't a transcendent talent that justifies an exception.

It sucks missing out on the potential payday, but we are enticing enough at the moment that signing a top Bosman eligible player (Goretzka, de Vrij, Max Meyer, etc) will take the financial sting away.

I don't care where Can goes, as long as its not in the EPL.

Also, from the same guy, we've scored just as many goals (actually slightly more) in the 20 matches we've played without Coutinho as the 20 matches with.

What's interesting is that the goal figures are almost identical.

With Coutinho: F50 A23
Without Coutinho: F53 A24

So why the big difference in results?

What is the logic behind being so anti "release clause".

Just set the value high based on a future model with appreciation that the club is comfortable with and move on?

If history has proven itself (Torres and Suarez), every player has a "release clause" official or not.

Because Can also supposedly wants a very favorable release clause, not a Real Madrid release clause

And no way would have gotten the money we did for Coutinho if we included one in his contract from 2 years ago. Maybe would have gotten half of what we did.

I know it’s looking ahead, but who would you boys want in the quarter finals of the champions league?

The winner of the Shakhtar/ Roma tie looks like the “easiest” path into the semis, but I think we’d advance over Real Madrid as well. Bayern and Tottenham are the only two I’d really want to avoid at this stage. We already know what legs against Sevilla looks like. No thanks on that. As average as united are in attack they still have De Gea and a manager content with parking the bus against us. Same with Chelsea. Those feel like ties that could go either way. Barça is Barça. Great team but I don’t think they’re as good as their results suggest. Truthfully Chelsea gave them that game despite playing poorly themselves. They panicked on the ball and banged two off the post. I wouldn’t be disappointed with a Barça draw because I’ve personally wanted a crack at them all along.

Of all the sides left in the tournament I think Bayern, City, and Tottenham match up best with us, Tottenham moreso than Bayern due to personnel and familiarity. Those are the two most well rounded teams left from from back to front imo. Solid back lines, solid if not dynamic midfields, and an elite striker leading the attack. The second half at Anfield against spurs was eye opening. That’s not a team I want anything to do with.

I think teams that want to get out on the front foot and play free flowing football against us are begging to get their arse whipped. Not to say a team as talented as city couldn’t beat us by 4 goals over two legs, but I like our chances better against attacking sides.
