But if I remember correctly, Balotelli wasn't even our priority striker target that window AFTER Suarez left... I forgot who they were going after but that player ended up elsewhere and we ended up with Mario/Lambert (and what a clusterfrick that was).
Sanchez (who went to Arsenal even though we offered higher wages). He was much more like a Suarez in terms of tenacity, movement, etc. Balo was the backup - but not a like for like back-up of the original target. He fit nothing about our style or system.
I'm not for signing ill fitting players (that's pretty much half the point I'm making), but surely there is someone between Lovren and VVD?
And Albi was still actively being unloaded a week ago. Two friendly appearances changed that much about him?

I'm sure there are, but it was made pretty clear that it was VVD or bust this summer... And if the staff hasn't vetted other options fully it could be worse than not signing anyone.
If the staff hasn't fully vetted anyone, then that's incompetence on their part (compounding their initial incompetence that required an apology and screwed the transfer up in the first place). Especially after the issue, we knew SHMPT was very reluctant to sell to us and should have been 100% in for vetting additional players at CB as a back up plan. Its costs us nothing but time - clearly we aren't scouting a ton of players (Kieta or bust, VVD or bust) so its not like they had much else left to do besides figure out the next best option?

That being said, I won't have any negative feelings about not signing a CB until Sept. 1
That's the camp I was in(other than pretty much stating that we need a 5th CB no matter what).
But Klopps quotes have brought out the emotions because they imply further moves are desired, but are not really necessary.

If Coutinho goes for upwards of 100M pounds, who would you all want as a replacement? Gylfi? Mahrez?
Posted on 8/7/17 at 10:47 am to SetTheMood
In all sincerity, Christian Pulisic
On a different note- we're getting close to shite or get off the pot time with Sakho. If we can't get VVD and don't get what we want for Sakho, what choice does Klopp have other than swallowing his pride? Loaning him out again does absolutely no good when we're going into the season with 4 centerbacks, and Sakho is arguably better than all of them

Sorry guys, but that's just lipstick on a pig.
Milner was not a good enough midfielder to begin with.
Albie was being shopped like a $2 whore for the last few months and wasn't able to get any real game time last year even with Milner exhausted and struggling. Even a week ago he had teams offering to buy him just not as high as we value him. Suddenly two friendly performances and we're good with him? Complete BS.
Klopp has realized our targets aren't coming and is trying to make do with what we had. He needs more cover at CM, so Milner can be that cover. But then he needs to have another LB just in case. Suddenly two players who weren't good enough before are said to be good enough. They don't add to our best 18, and limit the improvements our squad could have made.
I also call BS on Klopp saying we have enough CBs. Yes, he has to keep the CBs on hand feeling the love - but with less games last year, we needed 5. Matip, Dejan "'tis just a virus" Lovren, Gomez - all three of these guys have faced multiple periods of not being able to play in the last season. What happens when it occurs for all three at the same time? Klavan and Can? Not without their own injury issues.
Yes, I realize Klopps quotes to the media are not always to be taken as 100% truth - but there was NO point to the comments unless it was to soften the blow for a strong potential of a lack of additional business this window. Why say all that he said risk the firestorm otherwise?
Its a massive mistake and a massive opportunity missed.
If we don't do any more business, I see our top 4 qualification for this coming season as hinging upon 2-3 often injured CBs. We'll score plenty of goals, but can we stop other teams from scoring? I wouldn't bet on us at this point.
Sorry - end of rant. Just had to get all that out.
Agree- while I'm not a fan of "panic buying" or spending money on a bunch or squad players or players with potential--we can still upgrade at positions of need by buying backup targets. Jon Brooks sold for like 19 million- you can't tell me that wouldn't have been great business for Liverpool. There are similar players that we could've kicked the tires on that provide serviceable depth in the event of a injury. Matthias Ginter went to monchengladbach for 17 million, Sule for 25, Bonucci for 35...CBs were available

I don't think he's better than Matip at all... Lovren probably, but Gomez is probably going to be better in the long term.
But that being said, I agree, if we can't sell, no reason for a perfectly serviceable CB to be sitting around... And a Matip/Sakho paring makes me much more comfortable than Matip/Lovren

VVD has handed in a transfer request.

I like that better than the original GIF honestly

I think if we get VVD the window has been a success, its been obvious its been him or bust for quite some time at CB... a big gamble to take, because we have to improve on Lovren..
Milner is a body in the mf.. nothing more.. he's been a wide player for most od his career (maybe central that last season at Villa?). I'm sure he can fill and do a job every now and then.. I hope this gives Grujic an opportunity to step up and show what he can do..
How many more years does Milner have, so we can get him off the books? this year and next?
I agree that Moreno has the tools and apparently now a life line... It's no different than Lucas being in the shop window but keeping him out of a need... Sakho on the other hand, hasn't even gotten a sniff.. he's done... though I do agree he is our best defender.. not as smooth as Matip with the ball at his feet, but an equal or better passer and more importantly a better defender.. we need to lower our demand, because he is somewhat damaged goods and everyone knows he has no future here...

Would you guys be happy if we keep everyone we wanted to stay and only signed VVD? Or do you see an absolute need for a CM?
a cherry on top would be Ox IMO...

Ultimately yes, though I would have liked to see us land a CM.

Yep, but I'm also a bit hesitant because I wouldn't want that to impact Keita next summer honestly... I think if Milner is moving to the midfield we have enough bodies to be fairly successful

Moreno

Honestly, I think our biggest need in CM is a DM... Obviously, Klopp doesn't see things that way, so I haven't even beat that horse this summer...
I don't think Ox would block Keita... totally different kinds of players

I think as of today, it would probably be Moreno due to AR still acclimating... However, I would not be surprised if Milner is there next weekend...
