Yeah, but if you take him who do you leave off? And how does that help us bring a backup for Beckerman? Honestly if Beckerman, Bradley, or Jones go down we are super fricked.

No need for 8 defenders. I'm pretty sure there was a study done where it showed you don't need that many. Hence no Parkhurst. But otherwise I agree.

I listed Yedlin in the eight, but he is an outside winger for us, so it is really seven.

He's not a winger for us. He's a late game sub who would start at RB if he had to start. He's most definitely not a winger. Just because he's used there tactically doesn't mean it is his position. Regardless, Parkhurst would have been a waste of a spot. WC teams rarely use 7 defenders, and if they do, they have a very serious injury crisis.

So then there's no Chandler, no Wondo, but Parkhurst and Donovan, instead? I don't rate Parkhurst, but after what we saw of Chandler in the warm-ups, I can't rate him, either.

Boyd and Donovan in. I guess Parkhurst as well, but I am not set on that spot.
Davis and Wondo out. I am indifferent between Parkhurst and Chandler as of now.
I would take Green out of Wondo, but that seems like that was not an option.

Parkhurst is not of international quality. At least with Chandler you can see why Klinsmann would take him, as he is a fantastic athlete, but lacks intelligence.

Fair enough. Chandler over Parkhurst works. The big issues were no Donovan and no backup for Jozy. Nothing else is probably that critical.

The back up for Jozy is a massive deal for me. If a target striker is essential to the way you play, why you wouldn't take two is beyond my understanding.

It looks like you'll say anything to defend Klinsmann, even things that are patently ridiculous. Leaving Donovan off wasn't the worst thing any US coach has ever done, but Brad Davis? That dude would be second string in the BRSA men's league. Donovan would have given us much more quality on the wing, especially as a sub, than that hack Davis.

I think 99% of us were on the same page there. I was fine with Wondo, but not at the expense of not having a backup lone striker.

I think we needed 5 midfielders for these last two games, and we don't have a backup for Jozy anyway.
Nothing I've seen from Boyd in a US jersey makes me want to play him at lone striker in place of Dempsey even though Dempsey doesn't really fit there.

Except he's more likely to be the battering ram that we need just for the sheer fact that he is a very large player. If all he was brought on for was to be the late game sub when we punt it forward, it would have been worth it considering what has happened to Altidore.

You're building a nice straw man here...It's the Group of Death, in part because WE were in it. It's the Group of Death because any of those teams would be expected to advance in a normal group. I'm glad we advanced, but we didn't win the group, and we played much of this game with one leg tied behind our back because, Brad Davis.

Agreed.
RB - Johnson, Cameron, Parkhurst
CB - Besler, Cameron, CB3 (Brooks, Goodson, Omar), Parkhurst
LB - Beasley, Johnson, Parkhurst
I believe that Parkhurst is around the Brad Davis level of player as well - but he's *can* play those positions.
You can leave your 4th CB at home (let's call that Omar), your backup LB (Chandler) and your backup RB (Yedlin) and replace them with one guy.
Without any other changes to the roster (i.e. keep Green, keep Wondo, keep Davis
) you can bring two out of Donovan, a direct replacement for Jozy (Boyd, Eddie Johnson) and a direct replacement for Beckerman (Edu, who can also play CB in a pinch). Now, you have flexibility if/when injury and card accumulation strikes. As it is now, we were sold the line that we brought our two best 11s (+ Rimando), meaning that it's our "first 11" + "our second 11." Clearly, that's a load of horseshite - as many players have no clear replacement. We're left with central midfielders and defenders playing wide positions, and no strikers. We're making it work, but duct tape only holds for so long.
I think making those changes and replacing Davis with Donovan is pretty close to the best lineup we could put on the field.
For those that clamor for the inclusion of Yedlin, that's easy - replace Green.
