Most of those guys are fairly old and went the college route before USL started picking up steam. Melia, Besler, Zusi, Shelton, Finlay, Miller are all at least 27 years old. Dotson and Gasper are younger but went the college route.

Busio came in as a sub, is 18, and has played 2,419 professional minutes. Lindsay was on the bench, just turned 20, and has played 2,814 professional minutes. Kuzain was on the bench, is 21, but also had over 2,000 pro minutes as a teenager.

Minnesota didn't begin their academy until 2017, and essentially just fired their entire academy staff because of the pandemic.

And DC just subbed on a 17 year old American on the same day that another one of their biggest prospects signs with Wolfsburg.

I’m with pville on this one. Year over year the number of minutes American teens have gotten in MLS has exploded. We are moving in the right direction and I don’t think a single game with two teams who haven’t invested in young Americans all that much really changes the narrative.

But even SKC is investing in their youth, it's just that they are having to beat out established starters.

Erik Palmer-Brown could be starting for them right now, but they sold him to Man City. Actually, can't remember if they sold him or he turned down a new contract.

Why is this being held in Florida given the weather? Surely somewhere on the west coast could’ve handled this right?

It was because of how lenient they were with restrictions due to COVID I believe. I just remember Florida saying they could host all the NFL games or something like that

Large number of quality fields in close proximity to adequate lodging and food options, media capabilities, and you can effectively control who comes and goes. There's not many places that can offer what what Orlando does.

There's also a lot of entertainment and leisure options on-site for players, so it's less like being in a prison for 1+ month.

This article was written in the summer of 2019, so when you see "2019 pace", the author is extrapolating the numbers from the 1st half of the year through to the 2nd half of the year.

Chicago subbed on 21 year old American, Mihailovic, who had 1,410 pro minutes as a teenager. Would have had a lot more, but tore his ACL early in 2018.
