Exactly. A closed system like the MLS can participate in a Champions League format, but imagine if FC Dallas and the San Jose Earthquakes in every year no matter what.
That's why the Champions League coefficient system is so brilliant. The leagues have to PROVE how many spots they deserve with results. Nothing else.
