Staying positive as a US fan is hard

Basically, you guys know how it goes. One good thing is followed by a bad one. We don't even have time to celebrate our 5-1 thrashing of Scotland before Brazil beats us 4-1 and Mexico beats that same team 2-0. I know that elevator rises slowly, but shite, it feels like it goes up two floors and then down one every time.
Don't get me started on the Confed Cup / World Cup / Gold Cup.

One thing's clear, Mexico is a much tougher matchup for this Brazil side because Mexican defenders and defensive mids seem to have little problem playing the ball around in tight spaces to break Brazil's high pressure.
That killed us and it hardly seemed to phase Mexico at all. In fact, they exploited it.
I'm not down on the USMNT at all but Mexico's elevator certainly has a lot more technically solid defenders riding in it.

I want to see stats from this game. Seems like we were better offensively than Mexico was. Our goal was certainly better than either of theirs.
We were just uncharacteristically poor defensively and started the game with the jitters. But wm72 is right about how Mexico responded to the pressure much better than we did. It's not like we don't know the technically weak spots on the US are, though.

I think we learned that Gooch is probably done as a USMNT player. That's why we hope for guys like Ream to pan out because we need defenders who are good on the ball. Bocanegra + Gooch is an entirely too slow CB pairing and neither of them are that great on the ball. We'll need someone to step up there.

Yeah, once we got the ball out into space we really did create as many chances as Mexico. The problem is that Brazil had a lot more due to continually turning us over in our back third.
But, yeah, both you and Hendo are right that it's hardly a new observation to see that we need those skills in the backline to compete consistently against top teams.

Nah, regardless of how good the defensive mid is, that pairing can't handle speed. They aren't smart enough defenders to make up for their lack of speed at this point. Boca can still play but we need someone better next to him.
Brazil raped us in that aspect. We were caught flat footed and couldn't handle their runs. If you're slow, you have to have great positioning and vision to see the runs coming and Gooch and Boca didn't show that.
A great defensive mid would certainly help, but it's just a shitty bandaid on a gaping wound.

Yeah I tend to agree about Edu. We could certainly benefit from a better defensive mid but against Brazil there were so many times that the back line kind of desperately played the ball toward him when he had two defenders all over him and he actually did well to at least kick out wide to prevent a turnover dead center 25 yards out.
Not to say he played great but a lot of those turnovers were better prevented by playing the ball to another option.
Mexico's defender's did a much better job actually finding the open release valve.

US soccer is French basketball.
an afterthought that maybe turns out a good pro now and then.
Parker. He does not even have a French name.
I root for the USA, but come on, man. I dont ever have my hopes up.
I do remember screaming at the tv when world cup was at Stanford US v Brasil, and Brasil fouls US only good player and knocks him out of the game, and we could have a 11 on 10 game, and the US coach does not even bring a man on.
we play 10 to 10 until halftime.
total fricking pussy.
from then to now, I expect nothing from US soccer.
get back to me, when I should have hope.
to be able to pay attention to world national soccer, I follow Uruguay. Its not like following Spain and Germany, megaliths who will power to the semi's on the reg. It will be a miracle if the few really good players for Uruguay all have their health for world cup 2014. And even they fell prey this week to an own goal in a much needed game at home vs Venz.
Life is hard. Then you die. Heaven is a fairy tale.
May I hand you a beer?

Agreed. In fact, I would say he should have been done earlier but it just is exemplary of how poorly developed our defense is that he played.
Still, I did not come away despondent over that Brazil loss. I saw some positives in that game.

Brazil was a result of poor centreback pairing. We have better guys in the pool. We just have to play them.
Really hope Cameron, Ream, and Gonzales pan out.
I'd like to see cameron/ream paired with Gonzilla/Goodson for a mix of the best qualities.

I'm not convinced that any of the other CBs mentioned are clearly a better option than Gooch.
They all provide different options (one may be a better passer, one may be a step quicker) but all have different issues, most of which would be amplified on the international stage, just like Gooch's lack of foot speed was.
Ream has made progress since Spain (and Panama) 2011 (let's hope), but he's not an entirely different player.
Gonzalez suffered a severe injury, and has the same foot speed issues as Gooch.
Cameron, in four US caps has a red card and an OG to his credit.
Goodson may be the best option of the bunch, but I don't see him as wildly better than Gooch. A step quicker perhaps, probably not as good in the air.
Be careful what you wish for with "Anybody but Gooch." You might get it.
