The more I think about it, the more Donovan would make a bad arse slot receiver. He has the athleticism and already has decent size. He has the frame to get pretty big if he wanted to.

Demba Ba, Zlatan, Drogba, Ivanovic, Benteke, Rooney. Can you imagine Lukaku as a RB? My God.

Gattuso would rip some RB's head into tiny pieces.

Edit: On second thought he's a bit small to be a LB. Maybe as a safety.

Yep. The preperation to be elite in both sports is so different, that this comparison is silly.

There are a ton of Europeans and South American guys that are athletic enough to be elite in any sport. They just chose the "way out" sport that is available to them. So few athletes come from even middle class backgrounds that this is really an absurd argument.

Ok he's an exception though. But your point does stand. The perfect size for a RB is somewhere around 5'10" 200-210 lbs. If you took these soccer guys and trained them for size and explosiveness like football players some of them could get to that size

I just mean that he is listed at 5'7" but he is probably two inches shorter than that. And in my experience football players are generally given around two extra inches in height when it comes to what they are listed at. Listed heights in soccer tend to be a lot more accurate in my experience.

That's the exact same for NFL and NBA players. So basically if an NFL RB, LB, or WR grew up in Europe he'd be a pro Soccer player. And if a pro Soccer player grew up in America they would be a RB, WR, or LB

Probably. I think NBA players would be limited to being CBs or target forwards in soccer.

ETA: Some NBA players would probably be good keepers.

Right. It kind of helps midfielders and certain types of forwards and outside backs to have a lower center of gravity.

True. Being taller than say...6'5" or so though, and it gets harder to get on the ground quick enough. 6'3" - 6'4" is probably ideal for a GK.

Víctor Valdés, raised in the States, would be a badass linebacker. For sure.

A Francesco Totti raised in the States, would probably be a great athlete, as well.

Raphael Varane, in the NBA.

Exactly. Athletes are athletes. They play the sport of their culture to rise out of poverty for the most part. There aren't many Kakas and Mannings roaming the fields of the world.

ETA: Add Manziel...

Diego Costa, DE.

Llorente, a Mingo type LB.

Mascherano had the pit bull mentality to be a force at RB before he went to Barca.

yeah, douche it up.

I like Puyol, however. A lot. Hate seeing him past his prime, and suffering myriad injuries.

Piqué would probably have been a good QB.

I have always loved Puyol. Him, Mascherano, and to some extent Pique, I like. frick the rest of them though. And I'm not a RM fan (or a fan of any La Liga club per se), I just don't like the culture it has brought to some of the younger generation of players here in the states. They all try to be Iniesta, and many of them are worse players for it. But, I guess a Pool era Mascherano type isn't seen as "cool" these days.
