Also, what the frick is wrong with our fitness? GAM was the only one not having an asthma attack in the second half.

And despite starting 3 defensive minded midfielders, there were huge gaps in front of our CBs. I just don't understand it.

Another point I forgot to make about the USMNT:

Using the EPL as a comparison, I feel that most of the esteemed members of the SB view the U.S. as "Chelsea" or "Man City" v. Honduras' "Wigan Athletic".

In reality, this scenario, in my mind, is U.S. as "Stoke City" or "Fulham" and Honduras as a Wigan or QPR.

(of course, Mexico is Man. United in this scenario)

More firsts in the Klinsmann era!

The U.S., which had been 12-3-3 against Honduras, lost its final-round opener for the first time in five games since the "hexagonal" format was adopted in qualifying for the 1998 tournament.

When I watch the USMNT, I just feel like I'm watching a single match on repeat. A couple moments of brilliance, terrible losses of possession, laziness on the ball and a complete lack of heart towards the end.

this shite is the most frustrating thing ever. we are so bad at keeping possession that it makes me honestly believe my club and high school teams could keep possession better than the team out there today could. is that the most retarded thought ever? frick yeah it is. that's just how bad we are at possessing the thing, though.

Our fitness manager is Asian. I'm disappointed we don't have technical advances like Russia had in the 80s with Ivan Drago.

I haven't read everyone's comments, but a couple things I noticed. First this Honduras team is not the same Honduras of five years ago. They are much more physical, athletic, and talented than their previous teams. The same can be said for Mexico and Jamaica. This might be the hardest hex we have ever played.

That being said, this squad is talented enough to beat these teams. I feel like it is deeper than its ever been, but the squad is poorly prepared and lacks identity.

Altidore again suffered from poor service and I feel that we might have been better served to play Gomez. Our pressure from the get go was all wrong. By pressing our Cdm and CBs Honduras forced a lot of turnovers by Bradley. On the other hand out forwards didn't press or chase and our mids sank into our own half which let Honduras move their mids into our end. Espinoza made a living off of this today.

I agree that the first game of the hex is not the time to play Cameron and Gonzalez together. Boca would've been an asset in the hostile environment and has played with Cameron before IIRC.

It feels like every game we are left with more questions than answers.

Dropping deep and ceding the midfield to Honduras worked in the first half and helped us get the lead while also conserving energy. However, in the second half when both of the teams were gassed, Klinsmann opted to sub out three midfielders all in a six minute stretch. That prevented any opportunity for us to press late with a fresh quick winger or forward, like say a Herculez Gomez.

Another thing that irritated me was our center backs hoofing the ball down the field to spur on the counter, when there was time and space to control. That was an old Bob Ball trick that used to drive everyone crazy in the past. It just cedes more unnecessary possession to Honduras.

Figured you'd find this interesting:

quote:

but to a sputtering midfield that often lost the ball as quickly as it won possession. "That's why we did the subs in midfield," Klinsmann said. "We didn't find our passing flow, we didn't combine well enough, we didn't hold the ball well enough. We often lost the ball far too early."

We had some nice passing sequences once those subs were made, but still, Sacha needs to be played centrally, and not as a winger. I kind of think Klinsmann is retarded for this.

The game SCREAMED for fast, counter attacking wingers. Of course Jurgen didn't bring any of those.... so the next best thing is to take some slow(er) central midfielders and stick 'em out wide.

Same thing, right?

I dont know which thread to bitch in so I will bitch in both

Wow what a shitshow. I cant figure this team out. Win at Mex. Win at Italy. Draw at Russia. Lose at Jamaica. Lose at Honduras. Squeak one out in fricking Antigua. It's like Les Miles disease is spreading to all of my teams.

- Some of our guys looked gassed 15 minutes into the game. Chandler looked to have no legs under him the entire time.
- The subs made no sense. GAM was one of the few busting his arse out there and he is taken off while Chandler and Jozy are dying it seems.
- To me both goals came from lazy defending. Lazy defending/lack of hustle led to the first corner. And then lord knows what the hell was going on in the second goal
- I like many praised starting Cameron and Omar, but in hindsight on the road in Honduras doesnt seem like the right place to try that out. We look disjointed most of the game in the back
- Holding possession continues to be a major problem

TL;DR. We didnt deserve to win. Honduras was clearly the better team yesterday and that depresses me

I think it had more to do with the heat/humidity than fitness. The US only had two starters not playing in Europe right now (GAM being one of them).

Weak excuse IMO. These are professional athletes. GAM is also in the offseason, while guys like Jozy should be at peak fitness levels. That excuse only goes so far.

I don't think it's week at all. Professional athlete or not, when you're used to 30-40 degree weather, then dropped into an 85 degree environment, you're going to have problems.

Geoff didn't have stamina issues and he has been subjected to freezing cold sleet storms in Stoke.

Like I said, GAM is in the offseason and was arguably our most active and fit player out there. If our professional athletes cannot deal with a temperature change during the peak fitness season for WC qualifiers, then we have major issues. Remember that it isn't just our guys who have to go through this. Every team in the HEX has at least a couple European and/or MLS players.

We would have if we could have fielded the backline Bob had at his disposal for much of his tenure.

Not to mention a healthy, younger, and motivated Landon. F Landon, btw.
