So are we still pretending Jose Mourinho is an elite manager?

He said United "played well" in his presser today

I'm going to enjoy his meltdown at Man U even more than his belly flop at Chelsea.

He seems to be entering denial, which should be fun.

Teams in the Premier League are starting to hire really good managers. Mourinho is outclassed a lot more often than he used to be. Pep, Koeman, Conte, Klopp, Poch, and Wenger, for example, are all managers I'd easily take over Mourinho.

I like winning trophies, though.

ETA: He's better than the last two morons we had, and he's won everywhere. Didn't expect to seriously compete for the title this season (no, I don't care how much money was spent, rebuilding from the last few seasons takes time), but this has been frustrating.

I'd prefer high-scoring soccer and results (which Jose has had in some of his previous stops) over pretty styles that don't win in the end. United haven't had either in a while, and it sucks.

If you're gonna play defensively, you can't get shelled like this.

Arsene's not the greatest manager in the world, but the man did just win back to back FA cups and kept Arsenal in the champions league through the poverty years.

That's admirable, but LvG also won one of those on his way out over Alan Pardew. Not the best measuring stick for success.

And we all know those are actual trophies Arsenal have in their case.

I'll give you the Koeman argument.

I'm not necessarily sure Mourinho is going to be winning all that many titles anymore. All great managers have an ego but I honestly think Mourinho's ego has consumed him to the point of him no longer being rational.

That is definitely possible.

I've liked Jose for a long time, but I was so mad when Liverpool got Klopp and City grabbed Pep early.

What exactly defines this? You've been in a rebuilding period for what, 4 years now? You spend hundreds of millions of pounds and sign a top manager and are still rebuilding?

No. He is no longer elite, but that doesn't mean he's shite. I just think his shtick is played way the frick out.

I said it last week and I'll say it again. When you spend as much as he has. And you have the likes of Ibra and Pogba in your side. You don't go to Anfield for a point. You just don't. No matter what any United fan says, that is small club shite. The top teams should be playing proper football against each other. That was all we needed to see to know where Mourinho is right now.

Now, with his comments about Conte, it proves his small club mentality. He is a negative manager. His players have to watch opposing teams play fun, enjoyable football. They have to watch the opponent's express themselves. The atmosphere he creates within the club is just played out. It failed toward the end of Madrid. It failed in his second season at Chelsea. And it is failing again.

Poch is really going to be an elite manager. Man U should have gone after him. Poch's teams have all of Mourinho's positional qualities with actual attacking play.

The Glazers in my opinion have acted with short term interest in mind. Mourhinho is a good manager, but the defensive discipline he requires isn't the team that Man U is built for, where most of the players are still very much possession based, and the team doesn't even have a true destroyer, despite Herrera playing super well this season in that sort of role.

The results on the field. The team can spend and spend and spend, but a cohesive identity wasn't built under Moyes or LVG.

That's exactly what I'm saying. United can't figure out they can't just throw money at everything and expect it to work. That's been my frustration for years now.

Since SAF left, this team hasn't had much of an identity. There have been some good individual runs from guys like Martial and Rashford and Herrera, but there hasn't been much consistency.

So, yes, even though they broke the bank for Pogba and others this season, I didn't think they'd be clear title contenders because it takes time to build what they've been missing: an identity and a system that teams like Spurs and Liverpool have with their managers. But you should know better than anyone else that this doesn't happen automatically. It can happen with Jose, but it won't overnight.

I mean, I get it. Get your laughs in. Liverpool are a better team than United right now. It's been a while since you can say that.

But don't mistake me for some idiot fan who thinks that United are A-OK just because they spent a bunch of money. They've got a ways to go to get to where they need to be. You can't just pop some big-time players into a team and expect them to automatically be awesome when that team hasn't been awesome for quite some time.

I didn't like how defensive they were at Liverpool. I don't like the tentativeness so far. But that's why I said Jose wasn't my first choice, even though I like the guy for the most part.

So go ahead and call this hire a failure a few months into his first season. I think that it's too early to say, but, then again, I'm not the one rooting for the failure.

Exactly.

how he didn't go after Kante HARD, with his system, still blows my mind a bit
