On ESPN: LINK

Notes:
1) VAR for corners, situational second yellow cards, making sure the right player gets the yellow
2). Red card for a player covering them mouth!
3) some new time wasting rules (throw ins, goal kicks, and other situations)
4) Hydration breaks - 1 each half for 3 minutes (not surprising)

Bad idea. I get the reason but it's so easy to do in the normal course of a game (scratching nose, wiping sweat, etc).

VAR for corners sucks. It's going to turn into the NFL catch rule, but with even less consequence.

5 second timer for throw-ins. Referee’s discretion I believe, but if they call that foul, the opposing team gets the throw from that position.

The ESPN article explained that it would only be called if there is a confrontation. If two opponents are having a friendly conversation, they can cover their mouths.

The goalkeeper injury timeout is so easy to fix

Just book any and all players who flock to the touch line.

in all games throughout the tournament? It’s essentially like playing quarters. I don’t care for the interruption in match flow. There’s already too many of those moments from dives and exaggerating injuries/fouls imo

Red card for a player covering them mouth!

quote:

Any player who covers their mouth with a hand, arm or shirt during a confrontation with an opponent will be punished with a red card.

The rule has been brought in to stop potential racist comments being hidden from view, after the recent incident involving Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior in the UEFA Champions League. A key point is that if the conversation is friendly, players can do it. But as soon as there is any hint of confrontation, it could be a red card.

This is fricking stupid. Players should be allowed to talk shite to each other. I know you can't taunt, but talking shite is part of the game. There's a gray area there, but most "taunting" is penalized when it's over the top and more than just talking to the other player. Also, where is the line for "friendly conversation" vs "confrontation"? How can you even tell when that line is crossed? So, put a big smile on first, then cover your mouth and say some racist stuff to set the other player off, then uncover your mouth? Or if someone's having a friendly convo with you with their mouth covered, you pretend they are insulting you and flip out - they get red carded?

They should work on ventriloquism then they can be racist, and no one can ever prove it.

1) No one covers their mouth in a “friendly” dynamic with another player. So this already won’t be happening, and if there was a chance it might the threat of a red will wipe out any inkling of it

The “friendly “ carve-out was written to prevent the rule from becoming a strict-liability offense where any perceived covering requires a red card. It’s to give the ref an out

2) There’s only one reason to cover your mouth when engaging an opponent. It’s done in the modern game for a single reason. Let’s not overthink it

Detection will be challenging but if seen it’s quite simple to correctly enforce

It’s a rule that further pussifies soccer. It’s not good for the sport. Let them talk trash.

Not sure the sport needs to be taking advice from someone clearly not all too familiar with it to not know that talking trash is already largely legal and refs at the highest level don’t really care all that much unless it hits the abuse threshold (slurs) that mandates red

Which, if you were still unsure, is the only reason mouths get covered. A rare Laws win that cuts through the bullshite, with bonus that it will potentially decimate South and Central American teams

I don't really have a problem with the rule, but this is not true at all. I've seen opponents conversing plenty of times before games and during injury breaks where they cover their mouth for a friendly conversation. It seems pretty common in the NBA when the cameras are very close and players don't want the world to know every conversation they are having.

As a referee, I am very interested in seeing the throw-in/corner/substitution timers in real life applications. To me, those are potential game changers (and we’ve already seen the substitution one lead directly to a goal in a warmup game).
