Should "Elite" clubs be guaranteed UCL? - ESPN article

Relevent Sports chairman Charlie Stillitano met on Tuesday in London with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United about this year's International Champions Cup, an annual preseason friendly tournament that's organised by his company. Stillitano confirmed on Thursday that they also talked about "restructuring the Champions League," an issue high on the European Club Association agenda amid a power vacuum at UEFA.
quote:
"What would Manchester United argue: Did we create soccer or did Leicester create [it]?" said Stillitano, a former general manager for the club now known as the New York Red Bulls. "Let's call it the money pot created by soccer and the fandom around the world. Who has had more of an integral role, Manchester United or Leicester? It's a wonderful, wonderful story. But you could see it from Manchester United's point of view too. "Maybe that is absolutely spectacular unless you are a Manchester United fan, Liverpool fan ... or a Chelsea fan," Stillitano said. "I guess they don't have a birthright to be in it every year. But it's the age-old argument: U.S. sports franchises versus what they have in Europe. "There are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful elements to relegation and promotion. And there are good arguments for a closed system."
quote:
He said fans are more likely to watch the Juventus-Bayern Munich and Arsenal-Barcelona games in the current round of 16 rather than matches involving PSV Eindhoven and Gent. "This is going to sound arrogant and it's the furthest thing from it ... but suddenly when you see the teams we have this summer in the ICC you are going to shake your head and say, 'Isn't that the Champions League?"' Stillitano said. "No, the Champions League is PSV and Gent."
I agree with the fact that I enjoy watching the Juventus vs Bayern matches more that that PSV and Gent matches but totally disagree with his premise. There should be consequences for not performing well and locking other clubs out of UCL is pretty bogus.
They also discussed staging some of the UCL games in the USA which I, selfishly, am for but totally understand why Europeans are against it and don't think it should happen.

Man City?? Money Whoring doesn't equate to elite
oh yeah, they won the cup, that 90% of EPL teams don't even put out full teams to play in , so yeah, they elite.

Hey jerk off, not one person has mentioned City in this thread, and the only person who favors them whose commented is me and I agreed that this should never happen.
So WTF are you talking about?

Someone needs to punch that guy in the face.
Hey guys from now on the NFL Playoffs should just be the Cowboys, the Steelers, the Packers, the 49ers, the Redskins, the Bears, and the Giants every year. The other teams should just be happy to have the honor of being able to compete against these franchises who have been good at various times in the league's history.

I still think back to the days when I still had Sirius and would listen to the likes of him and Harkes for my soccer shows. Getting rid of Sirius was the best thing I've done. It forced me to find actual good soccer shows in podcasts. Although, I do wonder sometimes how my drives would be still listening to Stilitano brag about having dinner with Sir Alex in the mornings and Harkes over-pronouncing every non English name in the afternoon.

Manchester United
When I read the thread title, before I opened the thread, this is the first club I thought of as the quintessential proponent of this idea.
